Recent finds in underwater archaeology combined with evidence from terrestrial excavations offer a fascinating reconstruction of trade networks through the Mediterranean from the 4th-1st c. BC. The importance of sea trade in the ancient world cannot be underestimated and as the volume of goods moving through the region grew so did piracy. This talk challenges the notion that pirates and piracy were always a negative aspect of the Classical world and suggests how accusations of piracy were a powerful political tool of Roman expansion. The largest mounded tomb from the Silla kingdom in Korea was found to be that of a queen, who wore a pure gold crown and a golden belt of leadership. These make it clear that she was a ruling queen, but she does not appear in the official list of kings, although some queens do. How can archaeology solve this mystery, without any writing in the tomb?
