The 20th Annual Island in the Plains Archaeological and Historical Symposium will be held at the Spearfish Holiday Inn, Spearfish, SD, Saturday, October 20, 2012. The conference attracts speakers from a wide range of disciplines concerned with the environmental, ecological, and cultural history of the Black Hills. Researchers, interested members of the public, teachers, and students are all encouraged to attend and present papers. The Island in the Plains is pleased to announce that Dr. Marcel Kornfeld, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wyoming, will be the keynote speaker at the banquet on Saturday evening.
Symposium presentations are scheduled for Saturday, October 20, at the Holiday Inn Convention Center. The facility is located on the east side of Spearfish, SD, at 305 N 27th Street. Exit Interstate 90 on the Exit 14 ramp and look for the hotel on the north side of the freeway. Coffee will be ready at 8:30 a.m. and conference proceedings will begin at 9:00 a.m. There will an opportunity for a tour of the recently restored Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower on Sunday morning, October 21.
CALL FOR PAPERS:
Individuals or groups wishing to make a presentation are asked to submit abstracts by Saturday, October 13, although late submissions will be considered depending upon space. Presentations will be 20 minutes in length although papers shorter than 20 minutes will also be accepted. Please note on the abstract if a shorter length of time will be required.
