Professor Georgia Bazemore, current president of the Spokane Society, will present the results of her 16 years of archaeological work on the island of Cyprus. Her work concentrates on the religious landscape surrounding the temple of Aphrodite in ancient Paphos, which Homer identifies as the home of this goddess. Dr. Bazemore has located the temple complex of the consort of Aphrodite, known in Greek as Adonis. Cult activities in the temple of Adonis include prophecy and a belief in the resurrection of the dead. Students who have participated in the excavations will also discuss their experiences in practical archaeology. Dr. Bazemore will have a small assemblage of artefacts from Cyprus to share with the audience. She will also discuss the difficulties of archaeological excavation within the context of modern development of land for buildings.
