National Park Service Hosts Archaeology Day at French Quarter Center
NEW ORLEANS, LA.: Come dig up some fun and let the stories from the soil come alive! The French Quarter Visitor Center of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve will host Archaeology Day 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5. The free event is in honor of Louisiana Archaeology Month and Hispanic Heritage Month and will feature activities for aspiring archaeologists of all ages. Jean Lafitte’s French Quarter Visitor Center is located at 419 Decatur Street, New Orleans. For more information, call 504-589-2636 ext. 1 or visit www.nps.gov/jela.
The schedule is:
· 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. – children and other aspiring archaeologists of any age can complete field journals by participating in activities that will share skills all archaeologists use such as mapping and artifact recording.
· 2:00 p.m. – Tulane University archaeology professor Dr. Christopher Rodning will share his recent research and field excavations about early exploration in the Southeast, including south Louisiana.
The French Quarter Visitor Center is managed by the National Park Service as one of the six sites of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. The visitor center is the site of exhibits, displays, programs, and demonstrations of the history and cultures of New Orleans and the Mississippi River delta region of south Louisiana. The visitor center and all programs are free and open to the public. The visitor center is open Tuesday-Saturday 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The visitor center is closed on federal holidays and Mardi Gras.
