One of the most enduring questions in Southwestern archaeology is why many thousands of Pueblo people left the Four Corners region in the late AD 1200s, moving away from an area where their ancestors had lived for many centuries. There is not a single simple answer to this question; but this presentation reviews recent research in the Mesa Verde and Rio Grande regions that sheds new light on the climatic and cultural factors that may have influenced the migrations, where the migrants eventually settled, and what social and cultural changes accompanied their relocation.
