Between Life and Death: Interactions Between Burial and Society in the Ancient Mediterranean and Near East

Death is a defining feature of all societies.  Whether the dead are cherished or feared, discarded or worshipped, burial practices provide archaeologists with an unrivalled insight into life and society in the ancient world, through living people's interactions with the dead.  These interactions manifest through burial rites and rituals, the manipulation of the body during and after the funeral, grave goods and assemblages, grave types and funerary architecture, and the spatial organisation of cemeteries.  The wider themes which can be explored by analysing interactions between burial and society include monumentality, identity and status, memory and landscape, and of course, interactions between the different cultures which developed around the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.  We wish to explore all of these themes at our conference.

If you have an interest in the archaeology of ancient burial practices, and you want to spend an exciting couple of days discussing ideas with people who are currently researching this theme, then this conference is perfect for you!
