UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR EXPERIENCED EXCAVATORS: EXCAVATE A MINOAN HOUSE TOMB CEMETERY
What: The ongoing excavation at an unplundered Pre-and Protopalatial Minoan house tomb cemetery
Where: Petras, Siteia. (www.petras-excavations.gr) in eastern Crete
When: June 16th – July 14th
Brief Background: The site offers unique opportunities for people interested in these early periods of Minoan culture. The excavation is already advanced, as it has started in 2004, and up to now 14 House Tombs have been either completely or partially excavated. This makes Petras probably the largest cemetery known to date of this period in Crete. The website has also the full bibliography and there one can learn more about Petras, in general, and the cemetery, in particular. The archaeological sites of Itanos, Palaikastro and Kato Zakros are reachable by bus to the east. Mochlos and Gournia are to the west.
Requisite Qualifications for the Excavators: Dr. Metaxia Tsipopoulou, the project director, is looking for twelve experienced, hard-working excavators, who can dig meticulously, keep a detailed trench notebook, take elevations and draw plans and sections. Each person will be responsible for her or his trench or room.
Requirements for Participation: She is looking for individuals who can get themselves to Siteia and be able to support themselves. She has arranged for very nice apartments overlooking a Blue Flag beach for 2-3 persons with kitchenette, air-conditioned, and WI FI at a very reasonable price (15-20€/night). There is also a nearby tavern and full facilities in Siteia. She will provide transport to and from the site. Most participants will be American or British, and everyone is English-speaking. The records are kept mostly in English.
Application Process: Send your letter of interest and your archaeological resume at your earliest convenience to Dr. Tsipopoulou at: firstname.lastname@example.org. The positions will be filled as qualified individuals are identified.
