Project Description

The Magnetometry Field School will survey the area of the excavations of the Roman river port of Rusellae.

The primary component of the course is training in on-site application of ground-based physical sensing and the methodologies of interpreting the findings. Subjects covered include survey design methodologies, setting up grid and equipment, general topographic survey, and interpretation of data.

This is complemented by considerations of the landscape morphology and the impact of environmental changes in the area.

The course is accompanied by seminars on the results from the excavations carried out by the Alberese Archaeological Project for a contextual understanding of the survey data.

Room and Board Arrangements

The excavations are situated within the breath-taking landscape of the Natural Park of the Maremma, approximately 10 km from the modern city of Grosseto.
Students will be accommodated in shared rooms in well-furnished, comfortable lodgings in the medieval walled city of Grosseto, with easy access to amenities.
The location offers a host of opportunities for independent activities during weekends. You may decide to relax on the near-by beach, explore the natural park, or take a train from Grosseto to visit outstanding cities, like Rome, Siena and Florence.

Fees include tuition, housing and transport to/from site. Board is included during workdays (Monday-Friday) and consists of Italian breakfast, picnic lunch and Italian dinner.
