Project Description

During 2014 Archaeology Live! will be working at All Saints Church, North Street, York.

So it is finally time to move away from the Hungate excavations, which means we need as site that will have the amazing archaeology that York is known for. Working in partnership with the team at All Saints Church, North Street is going to prove to be just that. If you want to find out more about the church one of the best places to looks is the website at http://allsaints-northstreet.org.uk/

The church is on the southwest side of the River Ouse, within the Roman ColoniaViking City and Medieval Walled City. We will be digging immediately adjacent to the northeast side of the church and we are going to be able to use the church as a base for our work. So an amazing setting to do some amazing archaeology.

What are we going to find? This is the question that everybody, including us, wants to answer as there has never been a large scale excavation across where we will be investigating.

Roman - It is unlikely that we will find in-situ Roman features as they are potentially several metres below ground level. However, we are likely to reveal lots of Roman finds which have been disturbed over the centuries as well as material which may have been reused in the construction and expansion of the church.

Viking - Hopefully we will be able to reach Viking features and use them to help explain what was happening in this area. If we are lucky we may be able to get good evidence to prove that the church has early, pre-conquest, origins.

Medieval - We should be able to enhance what we know about the development of the church during this period. We are also adjacent to a range of medieval timber houses, so could they extend across the site? Was there any industry in this area? can we find medieval origins for a rectory on the site?

Post-Medieval - There has been a boxing club, Sunday school, church hall in later years, but what can we find out as well as that. I am sure that in Archaeology Live! traditions we will finds a toilet of some sort!!

The training excavation provides a way to learn about and participate in excavation, recording, planning, finds processing, environmental sampling, and processing.  Any other specific requests for training may also be available on application. Professional field archaeologists provide all the training throughout the course.

During Archaeology Live!, the archaeology will be excavated and recorded by the trainees; the trainers teach and assist when required. It is a field-based training program where people learn by doing the excavation, and by discovering and recording the archaeology themselves, rather than by classroom-based tuition.
