Job Description:

Responsible for the management of archaeological projects on ISMHS properties in accordance with clearly defined goals, objectives and policies of the division.  

Works to ensure best possible long-term stewardship of the archaeological resources both above and below the ground on ISMHS properties. This requires preparing archaeology plans, managing the implementation of those plans, and archiving the results in accordance with ISMHS broader archaeology guidelines.  Also requires that the ISMHS is compliant with state and federal archaeology laws as well as the policies and procedures required by the ISMHS for the long-term curation of recovered materials.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Draft archaeology plans in preparation for upcoming rehabilitation/restoration projects, and work closely with the Indiana DHPA to evaluate those plans.
  • Manage archaeological projects carried out on ISMHS owned properties.  This includes completing archaeological field projects, or managing projects that utilize outside archaeology firms. 
  • Manage the Historic Archaeology collections.  This involves, but is not limited to, cataloging and inventorying pre-existing and incoming collections, and creating physical and digital reference collections.  
  • Ensure that all incoming historic collections can be processed, catalogued, and curated in a manner in which it can be incorporated into the ISMHS registrar’s office.
  • Assist in the development of a broad archaeological management plan (AMP).  This would include, but is not limited to, drafting sampling/discard strategies for historic projects.  
  • Work closely with Historic Sites staff to prioritize archaeological projects and guide the direction of future development plans.
  • Provide budgetary estimates for pending archaeological projects.
 

Preferred Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Anthropology / Archaeology, from an accredited college/university
  • Registered on the Indiana DHPA list of qualified archaeologists for historic & prehistoric archaeology. (non-listed candidates will be considered; however, they must be added to the list prior to hiring)
  • Well versed in state and federal archaeology laws, including Section 106.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working as a Principle Investigator
  • Strong background in Midwestern historical archaeology
  • Strong background in Microsoft Excel and Access, and a working familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Ability to write professional quality archaeology reports
  • Ability to draft archaeology plans that balance the available resources, the needs for a given construction/rehabilitation project, and the best possible stewardship of the potential cultural resources.
  • Valid driver’s license and a vehicle that could be used during travel (with reimbursable mileage)
  • Ability to perform physically strenuous fieldwork for extended periods of time in a variety of difficult field conditions
  • Ability to travel throughout the year
 

Additional Comments:

  • Long days, evening work and weekend work are sometimes required.
  • Archaeological fieldwork may be strenuous, and it may involve working long days in hot summer, or freezing winter conditions. 
  • Insects, animal bites, and poisonous plants  are common factors during field work. 
  • Ability to work on a ladder and to lift up to 50 pounds is necessary for working both in the field and in the laboratory.    
  • Work is centered at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, with travel required to ISMHS administered properties located throughout the state.
 

Hire Salary: $33,228.00 / yr.
