The J. Paul Getty Museum
The J. Paul Getty Museum is seeking an Education Specialist for its second location, the Getty Villa, where the focus is Greek and Roman art. The Education Specialist is responsible for the planning and administration of programs for academic and adult audiences, including but not limited to programs for college students, college class visits and gallery courses for the general public. Liaises with local academic community, providing leadership in identifying and developing museum-based educational opportunities that meet needs of faculty and students in targeted fields. Participates on cross-functional project teams, working closely with staff who develop exhibitions and public programs, including curatorial, conservation, design, editorial, and events staff. Teaches on a regular basis; helps train and review teaching staff; and serves as a resource in subject area for department staff. Manages program budget. Will work some evenings and weekends.
Position requires advanced knowledge of ancient Greek or Roman art, history, and culture; graduate degree in art history, archaeology, museum education, or related field. Demonstrated ability to manage educational programs for the public; experience working with college faculty and students in a museum or academic context; experience teaching in a museum context. Must be able to provide leadership in a collaborative work environment; must have excellent interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communication skills. Must have excellent organizational abilities; ability to manage multiple concurrent projects; facility with managing budgets.
Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in museum education, archaeology, art history, or closely related field strongly preferred * Preferred candidates will have 5-8 years experience working in a museum or related educational or arts environment.
