The Metropolitan Museum of Art is seeking a specialist in the art and archaeology of the ancient Near East to fill the position of Research Associate in the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art, for a period of 3 years.
Primary Responsibilities and Specific Duties:
The Research Associate supports the head of the department. General duties include active participation in all the activities of the Department, specifically conducting research in connection with a forthcoming special exhibition, which focuses on art and cultural interaction during the Iron Age from western Asiatic centers to the cities of the Mediterranean. The Research Associate will conduct supporting research to assist in refining the conceptual framework and the selection of works for the special exhibition, as well as oversee the upkeep and maintenance of the TMS database for exhibition objects. The Research Associate will also help with the organization of a comprehensive catalogue for the special exhibition and assist in completing administrative paperwork related to show. The Research Associate will contribute to public programs organized by the museum and will participate in other departmental projects as necessary.
Requirements and Experience:
The successful candidate must possess demonstrated experience in accomplishing original research on objects of various regions and cultures of the ancient Near East, and show expertise specifically on aspects of the art and archaeology of the early first millennium B.C. Experience working in a collaborative museum environment is highly desirable. A PhD in the art history or archaeology of the ancient Near East is required for this position. Facility with languages required for research on ancient Near East generally and on the subject of the exhibition in particular is also important.
