Carla Sinopoli

Carla Sinopoli is a Professor with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, and is also Director and Curator of Asian Archaeology with the Museum of Anthropology there.  She holds her degrees from the State Universty of New York at Binghamton (B.A.) and the University of Michigan (M.A. and Ph.D.).  Her research focuses on complex societies and political economy in Southern India. She is currently co-directing a multi-year archaeological field project in the Tungabhadra River Valley of South India, focusing on emergent social and economic inequalities and the formation to territorial polities during the South India Iron Age (first millennium BC).  She has been the recipient of many awards and honors for her work, and recent publications include Ancient India and its Wider World (ed. with G. Parker, 2009).
