John Steele

John Steele is Associate Professor with the Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies at Brown University.  He holds his degrees from the University of Durham, UK (B.Sc. and Ph.D.), and he has been a Royal Society University Research Fellow and Leverhulme Trust Research Fellow at Durham, and a May Fellow at the University of Toronto.  His area of specialization is Babylonian astronomy and the ancient astronomies in general (including China and Greece).  He is the author of more than 50 research papers, and Observations and Predictions of Eclipse Times by Early Astronomers (2000), A Brief Introduction to Astronomy in the Middle East (2008), and editor of Calendars and Years: Astronomy and Time in the Ancient Near East (2007).  He is the AIA’s Webster Lecturer for 2010/2011
