Abstract: Women in the Iron Age – weavers of destiny
Lecturer: Hrvoje Potrebica
The aim of this lecture is to explore the diversity of interpretative models of the role of women in the Iron Age communities of Central European Hallstatt Cultural Complex. Major source of information related to the Iron Age women come from grave inventories: costume elements and grave goods. Using that data we can try to answer few basic questions related to inclusion of women in different social and religious status categories as well as how their gender relates to that affiliation. Based on few examples we will also explore how gender, age and status are reflected in grave assemblages on level of material culture as well as on the level of symbolic representation. We will also look for manifestations of gender-specific patterns of mobility in the mortuary record and explore problems related to sex/gender issues in interpretation of burial evidence from the Early Iron Age.
