Abstract: When China Ruled the Seas - Shen He and the Treasure Fleet of the Dragon Throne

Lecturer: James Delgado

In the 15th century, a seven-foot tall Muslim eunuch sailed the seas for one of the mightiest empires on earth. Chinese mariners, inspired by trade with the Arab world that began in the 8th century, merged Arab and Chinese maritime traditions to create ships that were the world's most advanced and sophisticated oceanic voyagers.  Admiral Zheng He led an armada of these ships, the fabled Ming fleet, on voyages of cultural exchange between China and the Arab world. Explore the origins of his fleet and the trade that enriched China and continued a cross-cultural connection on the maritime silk road.
