DISTINGUISHED LECTURE:

THE ANCIENT PERSIAN CYLINDER OF CYRUS THE GREAT

Dr. William Schniedewind, Kershaw Chair of Eastern Mediterranean Studies, UCLA, discusses the Ancient Persian Cylinder of Cyrus the Great. The cuneiform inscribed on this clay cylinder relates how the Persian King Cyrus conquered Babylon in 539 B.C. and released the captives to go home; it appears to confirm the biblical account of the Jews' return to Jerusalem. The Cylinder is on view at the Getty Villa October 2, 2013, through December 2, 2013.

3 PM - 4 PM

CUNEIFORM WRITING DEMONSTRATION AND PERSIAN DELIGHTS

Learn how to write your name in cuneiform, review the history of writing in the Near East, and sample Persian treats!

Presented in partnership with the Orange County Society, Archaeological Institute of America, and the Persian Arts Council of the Bowers Museum.

Fee: Free to Bowers and OC Society of AIA members; free with museum admission; $8 for non-members.

First come, first served. No advance reservations.
