Cyprus: Aphrodite’s Island (land tour)
Tuesday, April 14, 2015 to Tuesday, April 28, 2015
Tour Leader: Joan Breton Connelly
Join archaeologist Joan Breton Connelly for this springtime tour of Cyprus, a strategic and bountiful eastern Mediterranean crossroads for Eteo-Cypriots, Phoenicians, Greeks, Egyptians, Anatolians, and Romans over the millennia. From the charming seaside resort town of Limassol in the south to its occupied northern territories, including six nights in beguiling Nicosia, this custom-designed, in-depth itinerary allows you to explore the island’s unique and lengthy archaeological legacy from its first population by hunters of unknown origin, to the dynamic Bronze and Iron Ages, and through medieval times.
Explore magnificent archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, and medieval towns amidst the astonishing beauty and variety of the Cypriot landscape: gorgeous beaches, craggy mountains, verdant plains, and rolling hills. Included are all three of Cyprus’s UNESCO World Heritage sites (Paphos, painted churches in the Troodos region, Khirokitia) and three of the ancient sites at which Prof. Connelly has worked: Paphos; Kourion; and the coastal hamlet of Agios Georgios tis Peyias, home base for her excavation on the islet of Yeronisos.
