Detailed Itinerary


Sunday & Monday, September 13 & 14, 2015 - Home | Istanbul, Turkey
Depart home on September 13th and arrive in Istanbul the following day. Transfer to our hotel for a two-night stay. The rest of the day is free for you to settle in and relax.
 
Tuesday, September 15 - Istanbul
AM sightseeing includes the 6th-century cathedral of Hagia Sophia and the Ottoman Topkapi Palace. In the PM, visit the Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque) and the labyrinthine Grand Bazaar. (B)
 
Wednesday, September 16 - Istanbul | Embarkation
AM choice of two optional excursions (additional cost): the Underground (Basilica) Cistern and the Archaeological Museum, or a scenic cruise on the Bosphorus. PM transfer to the port to embark Aegean Odyssey, our home for the next ten nights. (B,D)
 
Thursday, September 17 - Çanakkale | Troy or Gallipoli | Çanakkale
Choose from two AM excursions today: either visit Troy, where excavations have revealed layers of nine settlements dating from 4000 B.C. to A.D. 300; or take a ferry to Gallipoli, site of one of WWI’s most tragic battles. (B,L,D)
 
Friday, September 18 - Izmir | Ephesus or Pergamon | Izmir
AM drive to ancient Ephesus, with its impressive Library of Celsus, Terrace Houses, and Temple of Hadrian; or visit Pergamon, dramatically-located on a hilltop, with ruins of several temples, a theater, and the famous Library. Overnight aboard ship in Izmir. (B,L,D)
 
Saturday, September 19 - Izmir
AM at leisure in Izmir. Cruise in the PM, enjoying lectures and the ship’s amenities. (B,L,D)
 
Sunday, September 20 - Fethiye | Patara | Xanthos | Letoön | Fethiye
Cruise in the AM, enjoying lectures and the ship’s amenities. PM visit to the ruins of the ancient Lycian cities of Patara, Xanthos, and Letoön. (B,L,D)
 
Monday, September 21 - Rhodes, Greece
AM tour of Rhodes’ Old Town, one of Europe’s largest medieval towns. PM visit to the picturesque acropolis at Lindos, with stunning Aegean views and the remains of the 4th-century B.C. Temple of Athena. (B,L,D)
 
Tuesday, September 22 - Kos
AM tour of Kos, including the tranquil, 4th-century B.C. Asklepeion, dedicated to the god of healing (Asklepios), amid breathtaking views. Cruise in the PM, enjoying lectures and the ship’s amenities. (B,L,D)
 
Wednesday, September 23 - Rethymnon, Crete | Knossos | Rethymnon
AM arrival at the charming port town of Rethymnon for an excursion to the partially-reconstructed Bronze Age Minoan Palace at Knossos. PM at leisure in Rethymnon. (B,L,D)
 
Thursday, September 24 - Santorini
AM visit to the recently-reopened Bronze Age site of Akrotiri which, in the 2nd millennium B.C., was a sophisticated city destroyed (yet well-preserved) by volcanic eruptions. Also explore the town of Fira, overlooking the volcanic crater, and enjoy time at leisure. (B,L,D)
 
Friday, September 25 - Delos | Mykonos
AM arrival at the tiny, uninhabited isle of Delos to walk among plentiful ruins, including the marketplace, Sanctuary of Apollo, and Avenue of the Lions. Early PM cruise to neighboring Mykonos for time at leisure. (B,L,D)
 
Saturday, September 26 - Disembarkation | Athens
AM arrival at the port of Piraeus for an excursion focusing on the iconic Acropolis and nearby Acropolis Museum. Transfer to our Athens hotel for a two-night stay. (B)
 
Sunday, September 27 - Athens
Explore the extraordinary collections of Athens’ National Archaeological Museum on an optional AM excursion (additional cost), or spend the day exploring independently. (B)
 
Monday, September 28 - Athens | Home
Transfer to Athens airport for flights homeward. (B)
