Fellowships Overview

The AIA is pleased to offer six fellowships for travel and study to deserving scholars. Fellowships are open to members of the Archaeological Institute of America, and information for each fellowship is listed below. In addition to these fellowships, the Institute offers a number of scholarships and grants.

Jamie Aprile

Jamie Aprile, winner 2008 Harriet and Leon Pomerance Fellowship (see individual fellowship descriptions for current recipients)

AIA/DAI Fellowships
The Archaeological Institute of America and the German Archaeological Institute (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut) offer reciprocal study fellowships. The program encourages and supports scholarship on various aspects of archaeology and promotes contact between North American and German archaeologists.

Olivia James Traveling Fellowship
For travel and study in Greece, Cyprus, the Aegean Islands, Sicily, southern Italy, Asia Minor, and Mesopotamia

Helen M. Woodruff Fellowship of the AIA and the American Academy in Rome
To support a Rome Prize Fellowship for the study of archaeology or classical studies

The Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship
To support projects relating to the archaeology of Portugal

Anna C. & Oliver C. Colburn Fellowship
To support study at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens

Harriet and Leon Pomerance Fellowship
To support a project relating to Aegean Bronze Age archaeology

Non-AIA Fellowships
Fellowship and grant listings from other sources

DEADLINES

The deadline for the Olivia James Traveling Fellowship, Helen M. Woodruff Fellowship, The Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship, Harriet and Leon Pomerance Fellowship, and Publications Grant is November 1.

The deadline for the 2008 Anna C. and Oliver C. Colburn Fellowship has passed, but applications for 2010 are due on January 15, 2010.

APPLICATIONS

Applications for the fellowship can be submitted online. Please review the Guidelines before filling out the online Fellowship Application form.

Current officers and members of the Governing Board, staff, members of the Fellowships Committee and members of their immediate families are prohibited from applying for or receiving fellowships, grants, and other financial awards that may be offered by the Archaeological Institute of America.
