Field school participants will excavate at a Middle Woodland/Hopewell village site (ca. 50 B.C. to A.D. 250) near Kampsville. The 2004-2009 seasons uncovered midden deposits, exotic trade goods (obsidian, mica, galena), and indicators of long-term use of the location (including an in situ Middle Archaic spearpoint this past summer). Kampsville is located within the lower Illinois River Valley, an extremely rich archeological region with sites dating from 12,000 B.P. to present. Middle Woodland, a subject of research at our institution for many years, is a dynamic and exciting time period in the prehistory of our region, one characterized by extensive trade networks, mound building, horticulture-based economies, and the emergence of an elite ruling class.
