Cultural Responses to the Volcanic Landscape: The Mediterranean and Beyond
AIA Colloquia and Conference Papers 8

Edited by Miriam S Balmuth, David K Chester and Patricia A Johnston

This book is the result of two interdisciplinary symposia held by a group of volcanologists, engineers, Near Eastern and Classical philologists, and Old and New World archaeologists, in Naples, Italy and Medford, Massachusetts. Contributors to the nineteen chapters examine the complex problems that can arise in volcanic environments and the various ways in which societies respond. These studies cross barriers among the volcanological, geological, antiquarian, and archaeological perspectives in studying such topics as risk assessment, responses in prehistoric and historic times, and representations in ancient literature. 250p, 64 b/w figs, 11 tbs (AIA Colloquia and Conference Papers 8, Archaeological Institute of America 2004)

Politics of Archaeology and Identity in a Global Context
AIA Colloquia and Conference Papers 7

Edited by Susan Kane
With Contributions by Walter Edwards, Oliver Gilkes, Yannis Hamilakis, Rosemary A. Joyce, Sharon Herbert, Francis P. McManamon, Ian Hodder, and Lynn Meskell.

One of the most controversial topics in archaeology is the relationship between archaeology and nationalism: how issues of ethnicity, cultural identity, nationalism, and politics affect the study of the past. This volume demonstrates that if the discipline of archaeology may be defined as the interaction of present and past in the study of material evidence, the interpretation of such evidence is greatly dependent on who is doing the analysis and for what reasons, be they political, personal, academic, or economic ones. The eight papers in this collection, with their variety of approaches and diverse geographical scope, including Albania, Central and North America, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, and Turkey, are a contribution to the ongoing discussion of archaeology and the construction of identity and how modern archaeology can aid humanity in the search for its past and present identities. 200p, 12 b/w figs (AIA Colloquia and Conference Papers, Archaeological Institute of America 2003)
