Donny George
University of Stony Brook

Professor Donny George received his Ph.D. in Pre-Historic Archaeology from the University of Baghdad. He has excavated in the Bekhma Dam area, Nineveh, and Um Al-Agareb, as well as working on many restoration projects in Babylon, Nineveh, and Baghdad. He is the past Director General of the Iraqi Museums and the past Chairman of the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage. Professor George played a large role helping to protect and recover Iraqi cultural heritage after the looting of the Iraq National Museum. He was honored for his work and dedication at the SAFE Beacon Awards this past January 2008. He is now a visiting professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and was the AIA Joukowsky Lecturer for 2008/2009.

Current Situation in Iraq
The lecture will give information about the modern history of Iraq, and what led to the 2003 invasion, together with the current situation in Iraq and the latest situation in the Iraqi cities.

Mesopotamiam Archaeology in General
The lecture will concentrate on the main features of Mesopotamian Archaeology, Architecture, Art History, and main Cultural con tributions of Mesopotamia for the history of mankind

The Discovery of the Nimrud Treasures.
In 1989 an important discovery was made by Iraqi archaeologists in one of the Assyrian Capitals, Nimrud (Kalkhu) 35Klm to the south east of the city of Mosul in northern Iraq, four grave chambers were discovered in the family area of the Southwestern palace of the Assyrian kink Ashurnaserpal II (8883-859 BC), found over 65 Kilograms of gold jewelries together with a large number ofprecious stones.

The Looting of the Iraq Museum
The lecture will give a complete account of the events that led to the looting of the Iraq Museum and the Archaeological sites in Iraq, together with the current situation.
