Cistern below the Sanctuary of Apollo Karneios in Ancient Thera Inhabited for around one thousand years beginning in the ninth century BCE, Ancient Thera is sited on a ridge of Mt. Messavouno on Santorini. The city was founded by colonists from Sparta. Constructed of local limestone, the city contained residential and commercial areas as well as a temple district.

The former slave cabins under a clear Caribbean sky on Bonaire's southern tip. These tiny structures of no more than 40 square feet each were built in 1850 to house the enslaved people working at the salt pans. These monuments are silent reminders of the Caribbean's gruesome slavery past.
