CPAC Announces a Closed Meeting to Conduct Reviews of two Memoranda of Understanding

US Department of State

The U.S. State Department announced that there will be a closed meeting of the Cultural Property Advisory Committee on Thursday, October 25, 2012, and on Friday, October 26, 2012 in Washington, DC. The Committee will conduct interim reviews of two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) that the U.S. holds with foreign countries in order to protect their cultural patrimony from being illegally imported into the U.S.  The MOUs are:

  • Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Government of the United States of America Concerning the Imposition of Import Restrictions on Archaeological Material from Cambodia from the Bronze Age through the Khmer Era (imposed as emergency import restriction in 1999; MOU entered into force 2003; renewed in 2008)
  • Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the People’s Republic of China Concerning the Imposition of Import Restrictions on Categories of Archaeological Material from the Paleolithic Period through the Tang Dynasty and Monumental Sculpture and Wall Art at Least 250 Years Old (entered into force 2009)

This interim review meeting is closed to the public and the State Department is not accepting public comments at this time. Public comment, oral and written, will be invited at a later date should these MOUs be proposed for extension.
