Archaeology Talk: Woman the Toolmaker: Feminine Knowledge and Skill
October 13, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT
Sponsored by: Historic Spanish Point
Historic Spanish Point’s Archaeology Lecture Series is back! Head to Spanish Point on Saturday, October 13th from 1:00-3:00 pm for a special presentation from Dr. Kathy Weedman Arthur of University of South Florida St. Petersburg.
Archaeological studies continue to describe Stone Age women’s labor as low-skilled, expedient, and homebound including their lithic technologies. This lecture reveals a detailed ethnographic study of African women who are skilled stone-knappers developing their expertise through long-term practice and apprenticeship. Women procure high-quality stone from long distances, produce formal tools with skill, and use their tools efficiently and effectively. This research serves as an alternative to the man-the-toolmaker model redefining Western naturalized gendered division of labor in craft production.
Tickets: $5 for Historic Spanish Point Members ($10 for future Members). Call (941) 966-5214 for tickets.
