Gender Numismatics. Fluid Identities and Ancient Coinage

November 29, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - November 30, 2018 @ 5:00 pm EST

Institut für Klassische Archäologie
Schloss Hohentübingen, Burgsteige 11
Tübingen, 72070 Germany

This international workshop seeks to explore the complexity and dynamics of gender roles in the ancient Mediterranean. Focus is on coinage as a source material that has so far rarely been investigated in terms of gender studies, although it provides critical evidence as medium of exchange, of communication, of power and authority on practical and symbolic levels.

While the archaeological evidence will take center stage we aim more generally at exploring the potential of genderd perspectives for the study of ancient coins.
