International Archaeology Day at Pueblo Grande Museum
October 20, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm EDT
Sponsored by: Pueblo Grande Museum
AIA Society: Central Arizona (Phoenix)
Celebrate International Archaeology Day (IAD) at Phoenix’s only preserved archaeological site, Pueblo Grande Museum (PGM) on Saturday, October 20. Enjoy a full day of archaeology activities, crafts, and more available throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For all those archaeology lovers out there, visit pgmarchyday.bpt.me to register for a two-for-one Museum admission ticket for the day!
Each year City Archaeologist Laurene Montero celebrates IAD by getting dirty at PGM with the volunteer preservation and mound stabilization group, The Mudslingers. “It’s a great way to celebrate archaeology, engage the community, and show people that archaeology is more than what they might think. I hope we’ll even inspire a few people to choose archaeology as a career,” says Montero.
Archaeology aficionados of all ages will have the opportunity to witness preservation techniques on the prehistoric platform mound, participate in a simulated archaeological dig, and do hands-on crafts inspired by archaeology and southwestern cultures. Visitors can also attend a free lecture at noon presented by archaeologist and author Dr. Glen Rice on the “Altruism in Food Sharing Among the 19th Century O’Odham”.
Interpretive stations throughout the archaeological site, and artifact show and tell stations will also be available during the day. And don’t forget to grab a piece of delicious frybread for lunch from the Yellowman Frybread food truck! All IAD activities are included with Museum admission.
