Life Along the New River

Presented by

Micheline Hilpert

Palm Beach State College, FPAN

Life Along the

New

River

is a

celebration of

Fort Lauderdale

s rich past, as told through the

stories of those who lived along the banks of

the

New

River. This talk explains the

geological

formation of the

river

and then

explores

the uses of the

river

throughout the centuries.

Changes in the environment and the different

populations

each have

had a unique influence upon

the characteristics of the

New

River. This talk

will

survey

the history of this vibrant

river

and how

discuss how its use

shaped the city we know today.

Micheline Hilpert has been interested in Florida

Archaeology since high school when she began

volunteering

with

the Fort Lauderdale Museum of

Archaeology in the early 90s. For the past ten years

she has

worked as an Administrative Assistant and

curriculum writer for the Florida Public

Archaeology

Network.

After receiving a Master of Arts in

Anthropology

from FAU in 2011,

she went on to get

an

Masters of Arts in Interdisciplinary

Studies

focusing on History and Political Science. She

now

teaches Anthropology, Archaeology,

and

History

at Palm Beach State College.
