Lunch and Learn: Mapping the Shatter Zone: The Colonial Indian Slave Trade and Regional Instability
October 19, 2018 @ 12:00 pm EDT
119 South Main Street
Lancaster, SC 29720 United States
Sponsored by: University of South Carolina Lancaster Native American Studies Center
In this presentation, Robbie Etheridge will examine the commercial Indian slave trade that early Europeans brought to the Native South in the 17th century as a force of disruption to Native communities. She argues that the Indian slave trade, along with other historical forces, created what she would call a “shatter zone,” or large region of instability that encompassed the presentday southeastern United States and resulted in the collapse of the pre-Columbian Native South, the creation of militarized Indian slavers, and the coalescence of the survivors into altogether new kinds of societies. All are invited to attend these free monthly lectures that usually cover topics related to local and regional culture and history. Lunch and Learn begins at noon-1 PM. Participants are invited to bring a bag lunch.
