The Involuntary American: A Scottish Pioneer’s Journey to the New World

October 4, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

New England Historic Genealogical Society
99-101 Newbury Street
Boston, MA 02116 United States

In 1650, Thomas Doughty, an illiterate Scottish foot solder, was captured at the Battle of Dunbar. He was then transported to Massachusetts and sold as forced labor. He was one of 420 Scottish prisoners who shared this fate. Author Dr. Carol Gardner will share how recent archaeological discoveries at Durham Cathedral in England have contributed to this story. For those interested, please also visit the exhibit “Unwilling Immigrants: From the Scottish Battlefield to the New World 1650,” at the Saugus Ironworks National Historic Site at 244 Central Street in Saugus, MA.
