A spate of innovative research over the past ten years has discovered much that is new and illuminating about Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, the 11th century Puebloan regional center. Mexican chocolate at Chaco, DNA analyses, “sourcing” of Chaco’s wooden beams — these and many more topics have been the focus of recent studies. Much of this new material has yet to reach the public. We review recent research at Chaco, and the new directions it suggests for ancient history.
