Ground Radar Day in the Old Athens Cemetery - A Hands-on Experience
Sponsored by Athens Chapter of the AIA
Saturday, October 19, 2013

Old Athens Cemetery
Jackson Street
Athens, GA 30602
United States

The Athens Chapter will provide a hands-on experience with ground penetrating radar (GPR) in the historic Old Athens Cemetery, on the campus of the University of Georgia (UGA). The radar unit(s) will be provided by the UGA Geology Department and demonstrated by chapter members. Participants will be allowed to operate the equipment and experience the collection of geophysical data over a portion of the cemetery as part of an on-going evalution of the site for the many unmarked graves that remain undiscovered there. The Old Athens Cemetery, managed by UGA, is the oldest such site in Athens and was closed  in 1885 to new burials. Over 800 persons were interred at the site with only 120 or so headstones present today.  The event will begin at 9 AM and continue into the afternoon or as long as weather permits.
