DESCRIPTION:We like to think of archaeologists as diggers who\, trowel in hand\, extract remains from the ground and describe their context. However\, while excavation is the most visible and iconic activity in archeology\, it is only part of their task. It is in the laboratory that they spend the most time processing their findings\, analyzing their data and proposing interpretations that will contribute to our knowledge. As it takes place out of the public eye\, this stage of the archaeological process is also the least understood.\nTo make this work more visible\, the Laboratoire d’archéologie et de patrimoine (Archeology and Heritage Laboratory) of the University of Quebec at Rimouski is moving into the Rimouski Regional Museum. From October 1 to 17\, 2021\, visitors are invited to interact with the archaeologists in residence as they continue their research on local and regional archaeological material.

SUMMARY:Berry site "Dig Day"
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are invited to join in the excavation of the Berry site\, located outside of Morganton\, North Carolina. Berry is the location of the Native town of Joara and the Spanish Fort San Juan which was built in January 1567 and destroyed in 1568. Fort San Juan\, occupied by 30 Spanish soldiers\, constitutes the earliest European colonial settlement in the interior of the United States.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Florida Public Archaeology Network on this hour-long stroll down trails in Oak Tree Nature Park to celebrate International Archaeology Day! This tour will highlight local archaeological resources\, focusing on the area’s Native American heritage. Participants will learn about Native American history in Northwest Florida\, what archaeology can tell us about pre-contact Native American sites\, and how we can preserve and protect these non-renewable cultural resources. \nHikers will meet at the Oak Tree Nature Park pavilion (707 E Hollywood Blvd\, Mary Esther\, FL 32569) at 9:00am CT for a brief introductory presentation followed by a guided hike in the Park. This tour is offered for free and is limited to 30 participants; RSVP with mthomin@uwf.edu to join! Hikers should dress for the weather and wear close-toed shoes. Drinking water is recommended.

SUMMARY:Uncovering History/Making History
DESCRIPTION:The College of Charleston campus community is invited to attend an unveiling for a new solar shade pavilion near Rivers Green and to commemorate the Indigenous and enslaved people who labored and lived near the site throughout history. The event\, titled “Uncovering History/Making History\,” will take place at 10 a.m. on Oct. 15\, 2021\, at the new pavilion located behind 65 Coming St. near the Pi Kappa Phi Bell Tower. Face masks and social distancing are strongly encouraged. The event will be recorded and made available for viewing on the College’s website. \nThe solar pavilion project took on greater significance when CofC students and faculty discovered a slave tag\, among other historical artifacts\, during an archeological excavation of the site last spring. The slave tag that was discovered will be on display at the event along with other artifacts from the 1700s to the 1800s\, such as a hearth\, animal bones and pottery. In conjunction with the event\, the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture and the College of Charleston Libraries Special Collections are planning to exhibit a collection of slave tags inside Addlestone Library.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this live\, interactive presentation on Zoom! \nHustling and bustling to starkly quiet\, the life of one of Utah’s largest railroad towns of the 1870s-1890s remains part of the historical and archaeological record. \nArchaeologists with the Utah State Historic Preservation Office and the Bureau of Land Management partnered with the Chinese Railroad Workers’ Descendants Association to complete two seasons of fieldwork at the town of Terrace\, home to Utah’s third largest Chinatown in 1870. Though ravaged by time and vandals\, the archaeological heritage of this site is rich and helping connect living peoples to this past experience. In honor of International Archaeology Day\, this presentation will honor of the voices of those past residents of Terrace through the Chinese descendant community\, archaeological discoveries\, and work of numerous volunteers.
