SUMMARY:AIA Türkiye: From Göbekli Tepe to Mount Nemrut & the Tigris River tour
DESCRIPTION:Travel with us beyond classical Türkiye\, with its monumental\, Greco-Roman ruins and Aegean sea backdrops. Find more history–and prehistory–amid the beauty of southeastern Türkiye\, on a route less traveled\, between Tarsus\, the birthplace of St. Paul\, and Diyarbakır\, set along the banks of the famous Tigris River that helped form the cradle of civilization. Along the way you will see the world’s earliest monumental temples\, dating back over 10\,000 years; explore excellent archaeological and mosaic museums; and enjoy diverse architecture\, from beehive-style mud houses to rock tombs\, and early monasteries to mosques. Enjoy local cuisine\, perhaps especially during our two-night stay in Gaziantep\, a city famous across Türkiye for its cuisine; and explore bazaars and workshops with local artisans and craftspeople. Our AIA lecturer is intimately familiar with this region’s deep history and diverse cultures. \nHighlights include: \n– Göbekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe\, two prehistoric sites dating back to 9500-8000 B.C.\, suggesting that complex societies and monumental architecture existed well before the advent of agriculture\n– The world-famous\, 19-foot-tall statues and burial sanctuary of King Nimrod (Antiochus I Theos)\, at more than 7\,000 feet above sea level in Mount Nemrut National Park\n– Karatepe-Aslantaş National Park\, Türkiye’s first open-air museum\, with well-preserved Hittite ruins and statues dating from the 8th century B.C.\n– Dara\, one of the most important trade centers of ancient Mesopotamia\, featuring rock tombs dating back to the 5th century A.D.\n– The flooded ancient city of Hasankeyf (flooded in 2020 for dam construction)\, whose artifacts were removed to the Batman Archaeological Museum that we will visit\, and some of whose important structures we will visit at a new\, nearby location\n– Diyarbakır’s city walls\, the second-longest on Earth (after China’s Great Wall)\, which contain a castle and a medieval church\n– Fascinating museums\, such as the Zeugma Mosaic Museum\, the world’s largest mosaic museum\, with exquisite Hellenistic Greek and Roman mosaics; and the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum\, a domed structure protecting a Roman villa complex that was saved from a 2006 urban construction project\n– An optional\, post-tour extension to Lake Van\, including visits to Van (Tushpa) Castle\, center of the Kingdom of Urartu in the 9th to 6th centuries B.C.\, and the ruins of the Urartian fortress of Sarduri-Hinili at Çavuştepe

SUMMARY:Discovering Byzantine Corinth and Its People
DESCRIPTION:Discovering Byzantine Corinth and Its People \nJoin AIA-Nashville Society for a free virtual talk on Sunday\, October 18\, at 11 AM Central. This Virtual Symposium is free and open to the public. It will be recorded. Register on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EZz5ABV4RJu6psOXovgnZQ#/registration \nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM:\nAncient Corinth is renowned as one of Greece’s most iconic archaeological sites\, famous above all for its Classical and Roman past. Yet the city remained an important urban center for centuries afterward\, evolving throughout the Byzantine period (4th-13th centuries CE). Drawing on recent archaeological research and excavations\, this talk examines how material culture\, including pottery\, stone vessels\, tools\, and evidence of craft production and long-distance exchange\, illuminates the lives of Byzantine Corinthians. These objects reveal a dynamic community that continued to produce\, trade\, and adapt to changing political\, economic\, and social realities long after the city’s famous Classical and Roman monuments were built. Looking beyond those monuments reveals a rich and often overlooked medieval chapter in the history of one of Greece’s most celebrated archaeological sites and demonstrates why Byzantine Corinth deserves a place in the broader story of Greek history. This lecture is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA)- Nashville Society. \nRegister: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EZz5ABV4RJu6psOXovgnZQ#/registration \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nDr. Rossana Valente is a Byzantine archaeologist whose research focuses on households and the technological\, social\, and cultural practices of medieval societies\, with particular attention to material culture. She specializes in the study of ceramics and other archaeological artifacts to explore production\, economic patterns\, and connectivity across the Byzantine Mediterranean. Since 2012\, she has worked at Ancient Corinth\, where she has directed excavations of Late Roman\, Byzantine\, and Frankish domestic and artisanal complexes. SUMMARY:Life of a Medieval Village: The Town of Nebo in the Byzantine and Early Islamic Periods.
DESCRIPTION:From the 5th through the 8th centuries\, the Nebo region became the home of numerous religious and secular communities. The region was dotted with both ascetic and communal monasteries that were interspersed with larger urban centres and smaller rural villages. By focusing on the results of the 2026 field season of the Town of Nebo Archaeological Project\, this lecture will explore how these different communities may have interacted with and benefitted from each other. \nSpeaker: Debra Foran (Wilfred Laurier University) – specialist in the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods in the southern Levant

SUMMARY:Investigating the Last Precontact People of Northeast Ohio: The Archaeology of the Whittlesey Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture: Dr. Brian Redmond’s presentation will focus on the archaeological evidence of the last Native Americans to occupy northeast Ohio prior to the arrival of Europeans. Known archaeologically as the “Whittlesey Tradition\,” these societies lived in large villages and depended on maize agriculture\, as well as hunting\, gathering\, and fishing in local streams and Lake Erie. Their many archaeological sites are known from the Lake Erie shoreline at the Pennsylvania border to the Black River Valley in Lorain County. They were essentially a “stone age” culture as revealed by a sophisticated stone and bone tool technology\, unique stone and clay smoking pipes\, and elaborately decorated pottery vessels. For uncertain reasons\, they left Ohio for other parts of the Great Lakes or Midwest about 375 years ago. A guided tour of the Fort Hill earthworks will follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:“Sex in the Roman Arena”
DESCRIPTION:A lecture in celebration of International Archaeology Day by Alison Futrell\, Professor of History at the University of Arizona. Futrell’s research is guided by her interest in the performance and imagery of power in the Roman Empire\, with particular focus on spectacle and gender. She is also fascinated by representations of the ancient Mediterranean in modern popular culture. Her talk tackles the sexualized nuances of the arena\, touching on the relative masculinity of gladiators as a group\, within Roman society\, as well as the how the different styles of combat demonstrated different levels of virility. And what about female performers? How did spectacularization of sex enhance demonstrations of moral and political authority by imperial sponsors? Women in the arena attracted the audience’s focus and disrupted messages of imperial power and challenged audience assumptions about strength\, about blood\, and about humanity.
