SUMMARY:Archaeology-Hour Screening: What was the REAL Paleodiet?
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person screening and informal discussion of the Archaeology Hour talk by Briana Pobiner (Smithsonian). \nThe modern “paleo” diet movement makes many assumptions about what our ancient humans ate. But are these assumptions accurate\, based on what we know about past diets? Presenting a variety of lines of evidence for prehistoric human diets including early human\, animal\, and plant fossils\, ancient stone tools\, DNA\, and living human and chimpanzee diets\, Dr. Pobiner will discuss significant changes in the evolution of human diets – and highlight what makes human meat-eating unique. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Mirror\, Mirror: The Many Lives of an Ancient Greek Wedding Vase
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our final event of the Fall 2026 cycle. Please note that this talk will be in-person only because it includes a report on unpublished material. Here’s a description of the talk from the speaker:\nA fifth-century Athenian wedding vase in the British Museum depicts a bride seated on her marriage bed\, gazing into a mirror as attendants bring gifts. Dr. Sheramy Bundrick reexamines this evocative scene and the vessel’s archaeological history\, exploring ancient Greek marriage\, women’s social networks\, ritual\, and death. From wedding celebration to funerary offering\, the vase reveals the many lives—and meanings—an ancient object could possess. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Sheramy Bundrick is Professor of Art History at the University of South Florida and a specialist in ancient Greek art. She earned her Ph.D. from Emory University and has received fellowships and grants from The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Fulbright Foundation\, the Archaeological Institute of America\, and the American Academy in Rome. She is the author of two books and numerous studies on Athenian vase painting and ancient Greek art.

SUMMARY:Carver\, Cleric\, Soldier\, Smith: Movers of the Late Antique Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Prof. Justin Leidwanger (Stanford University) \nAbstract:\nSeafaring shaped the Mediterranean\, generating social\, economic\, and other connections that enabled the Roman Empire. The unraveling of Rome’s political unity in late antiquity offers an opportunity to examine how these individual links—the people\, objects\, and processes—intertwined to create a broader network. In this talk\, I examine three of the best-studied shipwrecks from two transformative centuries spanning ca. 500 to 700 CE: one off Sicily carried 100 tons of architectural marble for a church; another in Turkish waters transported wine for military supply; and the third along the Croatian coast brought a diplomatic envoy and goldsmith. Together\, these wrecks reveal intersections of everyday commercial and elite or state-directed exchange as well as a structural shift in their roles amid the political reconfiguration that marked the era.
