Join Petrified Forest National Park for an International Archaeology Day Celebration.

Puerco Pueblo Archaeology Exhibits 10:00-3:00. Visit Puerco Pueblo to learn about archaeology in the Petrified Forest. See archaeology exhibits, artifact displays, and participate in kids archaeology activities, including a mock archaeology dig. Talk with an archaeologist about prehistoric lifeways and how we do archaeological research in the park. Meet at Puerco Pueblo parking lot.

9:00am Crystal Ridge Archaeology Hike. Join us to visit several backcountry archaeology sites and learn about how the Ancestral Pueblo people used the landscape. This hike will visit a series of small and large pueblos and rock art sites on Crystal Ridge. Meet at Crystal Forest Parking lot. Bring 2 liters water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, and sturdy hiking shoes. This will be a 2 mile roundtrip hike over uneven terrain, including some steep hills. This hike is suitable for children who can hike on rugged terrain. Plan for 3 hours. Hike is limited to 20 people, RSVP required. Email Amy at amy_schott@nps.gov or call 928-524-6228x233 to RSVP.

1:00pm Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Archaeology Hike. Learn about the time of the CCC in Petrified Forest and how archaeologists record and study historical archaeology sites. The CCC built much of the infrastructure of the park, and accomplished a great amount of work in a short amount of time. Their activities left their mark on the park landscape. This short hike will visit the remains of a CCC camp, CCC stone quarries, and see CCC historic inscriptions. Meet at the Puerco Pueblo parking lot. Hike will be 1.5 miles roundtrip on rough but mostly flat ground. Bring 2 liters water, hat, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes. Hike is suitable for children who are able to hike on rugged terrain. Plan for 2 hours. Hike will be limited to the first 30 people to arrive.

Puerco Pueblo Tours: 10:30 and 1:30. Join an archaeologist for a walk through Puerco Pueblo and learn about how Ancestral Pueblo people farmed the landscape, constructed pueblos, and interacted with far-reaching regions of the Southwest. Meet at the Puerco Pueblo trailhead. One-third mile hike on accessible paved trail. Plan for 30 minutes. Hike is suitable for children.

Petroglyph Walks: 11:00and 2:00. Join an archaeologist for a short hike to learn about petroglyphs. Petroglyphs are images carved into the face of rocks, and they represent ideas communicated by the area’s early inhabitants. Meet at Puerco Pueblo parking lot. Hike is ¾ mile roundtrip on a dirt road. Bring 1 liter water, hat, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes. Hike is suitable for children. Plan for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
