Vision, Visualization, and Computational Methods for Cultural Heritage Needs This workshop explores the application of computer vision research, visualization, and computational methods to cultural heritage needs. In specific, it focuses on emerging computer science methods and technologies useful for digitally recording, preserving, and reconstructing archaeological artifacts and for presenting archaeological site interpretations. Archaeologists, cultural heritage preservationists and computer vision, visualization, graphics, and new media practitioners will comprise this forum. Topics to be discussed are those assisting cultural heritage preservation by transforming archaeological laboratory practice and interpretation through: * Precision 3D shape modeling and reconstruction * Thin shell objects reconstruction * Measurement of style in order to recognize the artisan or factory that produced the artifact * Monitoring, cataloguing and visualization * Surveying, mapping and other digital documenting techniques for large areas * Surface marking and texture modeling for vessel reconstruction * Artifact stitching and mending and sherd modeling * Object scanning for virtual reality for virtual site navigation and virtual museums * Computer Vision-enabled laboratory artifact processing * Computer Vision-enabled collections management * Archaeological collection re-use via digital proxies * New and optimized possibilities for digitized artifact use in public interpretation These topics are meant to be suggestive rather than exclusive.
