SUMMARY:Bob Sutton - Recovering Zeuxis’ Helen: The Invention of the Female Nude
DESCRIPTION:Bob Sutton\, Professor Emeritus\, Indiana University\nRecovering Zeuxis’ Helen: The Invention of the Female Nude \nClassical Athenian painted vases often displayed risqué images of naked female bathers. Around 430 BCE\, this theme is suddenly transformed into noble images of goddesses\, brides\, and Helen of Troy that decorate vessels designed for female use. Appearing as the discretely nude kneeling bather type\, they likely reflect a lost monumental painting of Helen by Zeuxis of Heraclea. This change appears pivotal in establishing respectable female nudity in Classical art and the Renaissance. \nJohns Hopkins University Homewood campus Olin Hall room 305

SUMMARY:Something Old\, Something Blue: The Color of Innovation through Ancient Western Asian Seals
DESCRIPTION:Stone and clay may dominate archaeological narratives of Ancient Western Asian museum galleries\, shaping our understanding through what has survived best. Yet\, ancient craftspeople worked within a far richer material world that included glass\, glazes\, pigments\, faience\, and one of history’s earliest synthetic materials: Egyptian blue or zagindurû in Akkadian. Drawing on the Ancient Western Asian seal collection at the Morgan Library & Museum made famous by the glyptic scholarship of Edith Porada\, this lecture explores how seals can open a window into broader questions of material performance and innovation. Rather than viewing stone as the pinnacle medium in traditional hierarchies of value\, it argues for a more expansive perspective on seal materials that recognizes experimentation\, technical knowledge\, and creativity. \nDr. Pınar Durgun is an art-historically trained archaeologist with a strong background in anthropology. She has a Ph.D. from Brown University’s Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World. Dr. Durgun has worked as a researcher\, educator\, and curator at various museums including the Pergamon Museum’s Vorderasiatisches Museum in Berlin and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Her research focuses on death and burial practices\, copies and copying\, images and identity making\, materials and makers in the ancient world.

SUMMARY:Alexander Hollman (University of Washington): Magic\, Underworld Gods\, Competition: The Newly Published Curse Tablets of Antioch & Caesarea (Rumpakis Lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Ancient curse tablets\, with texts usually scraped into thin\, soft lead sheets\, then rolled up and hidden in tombs\, wells\, or walls\, represent some of the most fascinating sources of ancient beliefs in magic and dark powers. \nCurses could target rivals in business or love\, circus charioteers racing against one’s own favorite faction\, or even a humble green grocer who had done the writer some unnamed wrong. \nProfessor Hollmann (University of Washington)\, in collaboration with Robert Daniel of the University of Cologne\, has been working on a on a two-volume edition\, translation\, and commentary of Ancient Greek lead curse tablets from ancient Antioch and Caesarea and will introduce us to some of his newest discoveries.

SUMMARY:Lives Beneath the City: Archaeology at Indianapolis’ Greenlawn Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Construction of the Henry Street Bridge brought renewed attention to portions of Indianapolis’ historic Old and New Burying Grounds\, later known collectively as Greenlawn Cemetery.\nArchaeologists documented more than 1\,700 burial shafts within the project area\, revealing a complex landscape shaped by nineteenth-century burial\, earlier relocation efforts\, and more than a century of urban development. This talk explores how archaeology\, bioarchaeology\, historical research\, and community collaboration are helping reconstruct the cemetery’s history and the lives of the people buried there\, while guiding their respectful care and eventual reburial.
