SUMMARY:“Sex in the Roman Arena”
DESCRIPTION:A lecture in celebration of International Archaeology Day by Alison Futrell\, Professor of History at the University of Arizona. Futrell’s research is guided by her interest in the performance and imagery of power in the Roman Empire\, with particular focus on spectacle and gender. She is also fascinated by representations of the ancient Mediterranean in modern popular culture. Her talk tackles the sexualized nuances of the arena\, touching on the relative masculinity of gladiators as a group\, within Roman society\, as well as the how the different styles of combat demonstrated different levels of virility. And what about female performers? How did spectacularization of sex enhance demonstrations of moral and political authority by imperial sponsors? Women in the arena attracted the audience’s focus and disrupted messages of imperial power and challenged audience assumptions about strength\, about blood\, and about humanity.

SUMMARY:Jacob Lauinger - The Assyrian Siege of Jerusalem: History as Metaphor and Simile
DESCRIPTION:Jacob Lauinger\, Johns Hopkins University\nGilman Hall room 50\nThe Assyrian Siege of Jerusalem: History as Metaphor and Simile\nIn 701 BCE\, the Assyrian army besieged the city of Jerusalem. Different narratives describing this siege are preserved both in the Hebrew Bible and also in the Assyrian king Sennacherib’s own royal annals. In this lecture\, we will look at the Judahite and Assyrian accounts of the siege\, focusing on their differences. Comparing the two accounts\, we will ask not just if we can determine “what actually happened\,” but also why the ancient scribes on either side of the conflict narrated their histories of this same event in these different ways.

SUMMARY:Revelation & Archaeology at Sardis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exploration of the archaeological history of an ancient capital that became a historic Christian city. \nSardis\, a UNESCO World Heritage site\, is known from the Bible as one of the seven cities of Revelation. But before that\, it was the capital of Lydia\, a legendary ancient empire where coinage was first invented. Excavations at this ancient Turkish city have revealed major changes in pagan sanctuaries during the fourth and fifth centuries AD—a period shaped by the recognition and spread of Christianity in the eastern Roman Empire. \nFor the last 18 years\, University of Wisconsin– Madison professor Nick Cahill has directed the excavations at Sardis. In this lecture\, he will reflect on what he has learned through decades of fieldwork.

SUMMARY:Spooky Archaeology: Myth and the Science of the Past
DESCRIPTION:The first presentation in the AIA Dayton 2026-27 Lecture Series presented by Dr. Jeb Card\, Associate Teaching Professor in Anthropology at Miami University\, Oxford\, Ohio sponsored by an AIA R.S. Webster Lectureship grant. \nOutside of scientific journals\, archaeologists are depicted as searching for lost cities and mystical artifacts in news reports\, television\, video games\, and movies like Indiana Jones or The Mummy. This fantastical image has little to do with day-to-day science\, yet it is deeply connected to why people are fascinated by the ancient past. People today continue to find the mystical and archaeology and have a fascination with exotic artifacts and eerie practices. Exploring the development of archaeology helps us understand what archaeology is and why it matters. In this presentation by Jeb J. Card\, the audience will follow a trail of clues left by adventurers and professional archaeologists through haunted museums\, mysterious hieroglyphic inscriptions\, fragments of a lost continent that never existed\, and deep into an investigation of magic and murder. \nThis lecture is scheduled to take place in person in the Science Center Auditorium (SC 114) at The University of Dayton. \nFor a campus map with building and parking information visit https://udayton.edu/map/ \nThanks to the Archaeological Institute of America’s Lecture Program and our Dayton Society members this lecture is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Vigna Randanini: The Jewish Catacombs of Rome
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jessica Dello Russo for an engaging exploration of the Jewish catacombs of ancient Rome and the discoveries that are transforming our understanding of Jewish life and burial practices in antiquity. A specialist in Roman topography\, funerary archaeology\, and the history of archaeology\, Dr. Dello Russo has developed and curated major scholarly initiatives\, including the DAPICS image archive\, the BiblioSelect research indices\, the Luminaria blog\, and the ongoing digitization of the archives of ICS founder Estelle Shohet Brettman. \nDr. Dello Russo’s archaeological and archival research has yielded significant discoveries\, including pieces of the renowned “Sarcophagus of the Menorah” from the Jewish Catacombs of Vigna Randanini\, the rediscovery of the long-inaccessible Jewish catacomb of Vigna Cimarra\, and previously unpublished documentation from the earliest excavations of Rome’s Jewish catacombs. These findings have shed new light on the history and preservation of these extraordinary underground cemeteries. Drawing on her doctoral research\, Dr. Dello Russo will discuss the history\, archaeology\, and enduring significance of Rome’s Jewish catacombs\, offering fresh insights into one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Diaspora and the remarkable subterranean monuments that preserve its legacy.

SUMMARY:Tess Davis\, “Blood Antiquities: Tomb Raiders\, Art Smugglers\, and the Black Market in Cultural Treasures”
DESCRIPTION:We all know the thrill of tomb raiding adventure novels and Hollywood films—Indiana Jones\, Lara Croft\, Thomas Crown—hunting for hidden treasures. But the real stories of looted and trafficked cultural property are far darker. In reality\, it’s no longer daring explorers who dig up the past\, but opportunistic criminals\, war profiteers\, mafia networks\, armed insurgents\, and even terrorist organizations. \nThe Antiquities Coalition\, founded in 2014 by Deborah Lehr\, was created to combat this cultural racketeering. As a “think and do tank\,” the Coalition unites business leaders\, government officials\, lawyers\, security experts\, and other professionals in working towards a future when the past is preserved for the next generation\, not looted\, smuggled\, and sold to the highest bidder. \nIn this exclusive talk\, Executive Director and attorney Tess Davis takes you behind the scenes to reveal the high-stakes\, illicit world where stolen art and cultural treasures fuel crime\, conflict\, and corruption—and the ways we can fight back.

SUMMARY:Hot Histories: How Chile Peppers Conquered the World
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Chiou (University of Alabama/AIA National lecturer) \nToday\, chili peppers are central to cuisines across Asia\, Africa\, Europe\, and the Americas\, but all domesticated chili peppers trace their origins to the Indigenous\npeoples of the Americas. Drawing on archaeology\, botany\, and history\, this lecture explores how chili peppers were first domesticated\, how they spread across ancient\nsocieties in the Americas\, and how global trade and colonialism transformed them into one of the world’s most influential foods. From ancient farmers and cooks to\nmodern global cuisine\, this talk traces the remarkable story of how a small pepper reshaped the human experience of flavor.
