SUMMARY:Corpse Wine: Dionysiac Imagery and the Fermentation of the Dead in Roman Sarcophagi
DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Mont Allen\, Southern Illinois University \nWhy are roughly one-ninth of all surviving Roman sarcophagi shaped not like rectangular boxes with squared-off ends\, but instead like lenoi: those large tubs or vats with rounded ends in which Greeks and Romans pressed grapes and fermented the juice to make wine\, an association underscored by the Dionysiac imagery that often appears on the sides of these sarcophagi? What purpose did it serve within the funerary context? Or to put it most bluntly: Why did so many Romans want to imagine their dearly departed as resting within a wine vat?! \nI suggest that it explicitly invited viewers — bereaved family members — to reconceive the corpse’s decomposition and moldering within the vat-like casket in Dionysiac terms: as a process of fermentation like that which transformed grapes into wine. It offered mourners a comforting fantasy\, to reimagine the deceased’s putrefaction as instead a transubstantiation into a delicious elixir\, something elevated\, intoxicating\, and divine. Exploring a wide variety of evidence — art historical\, archaeological\, and taphonomic — this talk examines the plausibility of such an argument\, with special attention paid to the visual material and to what we can reconstruct about how Romans would have liquefied within their sarcophagi.

SUMMARY:The reception of ancient Egypt in the medieval Muslim world
DESCRIPTION:The Ann Santen Endowed Lecture \nOkasha El Daly\, “The reception of ancient Egypt in the medieval Muslim world”\nTuesday\, September 17\n7:30 – 9:00 PM\nDavidson College\nVisual Arts Center VAC-117 Semans Lecture Hall \nThese lectures are sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America\, with funding from the Davidson College Public Lectures Committee and the departments of Art\, Classics\, Educational Studies\, and History. \nAbout the lecture: \nContrary to the prevailing view that the conversion of Egyptians first to Christianity and then Islam ended interest in their own heritage\, they continued to study their own past with great pride. Many medieval Arab scholars visited Egypt to study its heritage and ancient scripts. This interest in ancient Egyptian scripts led to many scholarly attempts to decipher them. Here is a brief study of the motivations behind their interest and the degrees of their success in the decipherment and understanding of ancient Egypt. Nearly all the writers interested in Egyptian hieroglyphs were alchemists; many were also called Sufis or Mystics (for example\, Jabir\, Dhu Al-Nun\, and Ibn Waḥshiyah). The fame of Egypt as the land of science\, wisdom\, and mysticism created a welcoming environment for the reception of ancient Egyptian thought and arts among medieval Muslim scholars and the general public. This medieval Muslim reception fills a gap of about a thousand years in the history of Egyptology. \nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Okasha El Daly specializes in the history\, art\, religion\, and languages of Egypt from the birth of its civilization to its contemporary history and current affairs. He has served as Inspector of Antiquities in the Giza Pyramids Area\, worked as a guide and lecturer in Egypt\, and lectured on the AIA’s national lecture circuit. He has directed several international projects\, including the Foundation for Science\, Technology\, and Civilisation in the UK and the recent Qatar-Sudan Archaeological Project. His book\, Egyptology: The Missing Millennium (2005)\, shows that medieval scholars in Egypt and beyond were as keen as we are to explore ancient Egyptian sciences and arts. \nThese lectures are sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America\, with funding from the Davidson College Public Lectures Committee and the departments of Art\, Classics\, Educational Studies\, and History. \nIndividuals can support us by joining the Archaeological Institute of America for $55 (students $30)\, which includes a subscription to Archaeology magazine. SUMMARY:Towards an Archaeology of Cult in a Greek Colony in the West: New Excavations in the Main Urban Sanctuary of Selinunte
DESCRIPTION:Ellen and Charles S. La Follette Lecture \nDr. Clemente Marconi: “Towards an Archaeology of Cult in a Greek Colony in the West: New Excavations in the Main Urban Sanctuary of Selinunte” \nIn-person lecture\nTuesday\, October 8 at 5:00 pm EST\nAmherst College\, Paino Lecture Hall (Beneski 107) \nA short reception will follow the lecture \nAbstract:\nThis presentation focuses on some of the most significant finds from the Institute of Fine Arts–NYU excavations in the main urban sanctuary of Selinunte. Although investigations in this area date back to the early nineteenth century\, our new excavations are bringing to light a wealth of new data\, including a complete stratigraphic sequence from the late fourth century BCE all the way down to Prehistory. Of particular significance are the finds in Temple R\, built for a goddess ca. 570 BCE. Sealed by a thick layer of fill in ca. 300 BCE\, the temple is entirely preserved in its original phases\, including the previous use of the area for an open-air cult around the time of Greek settlement\, the phase of construction with a rich foundation deposit\, partial burning and looting on the occasion of the Carthaginian conquest of Selinus in 409 BCE\, and a restoration by the Selinuntine exiles returning home a few years later. Our finds make it possible to fully reconstruct\, for the first time\, the biography of a temple in Selinunte. More important\, the fully preserved\, rich assemblage of faunal remains and artifacts allows us to reconstruct a significant part of the ritual activities in this area of the sanctuary. \nBiography:\nClemente Marconi earned his B.A. at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” (1990) and his Ph.D. at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (1997). Since 2006\, he is the James R. McCredie Professor in the History of Greek Art and Archaeology and University Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts–NYU\, and since 2017 he is also Full Professor of Classical Archaeology in the Dipartimento di Beni Culturali e Ambientali of the Università degli Studi di Milano. He is the director of the archaeological mission on the acropolis of Selinunte of the Institute of Fine Arts–NYU and the Università degli Studi di Milano. Among his books\, he is the author of Temple Decoration and Cultural Identity in the Archaic Greek World (Cambridge and New York\, 2007); co-author of “Sicile Ancienne:” Hittorff and the Architecture of Classical Sicily (Cologne\, 2017); editor of The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Art and Architecture (Oxford and New York\, 2014); and co-editor of Sicily: Art and Invention between Greece and Rome (Los Angeles\, 2013). A Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute\, he is the director of The Journal of Ancient Architecture\, and in the editorial board of the journals Res: Anthropology and Aesthetics\, Sicilia Antiqua\, and Prospettiva. SUMMARY:The World in Between: Egypt and Nubia in Africa. Telling the Story Through Museum Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:The first presentation in the Archaeological Institute of America Dayton Society’s 2024-2025 Lecture Series presented by Dr. Anastasia Dakouri-Hild\, Associate Professor of Aegean and Near Eastern Art and Archaeology at the University of Virginia. \nThis presentation discusses the complex interrelationship between ancient Egypt and Nubia based on a new planned exhibition slated to open at the University of Virginia. Beyond merely acknowledging the geographical position of ancient Egypt on the African continent\, the lecture examines the extent to which Egypt was of Africa culturally\, first by scrutinizing the categories of ‘Egypt’ and ‘Nubia’ and the connections between material and visual culture and identity. Subsequently it utilizes key artifacts in US collections as case studies to tell the story of this interaction anew\, fleshing out the rich and complex rapport between Egypt and Nubia over the course of several millennia\, from prehistory (ca. 3800 BCE) through pharaonic Meroe (350 CE). In the process\, the lecture also highlights the importance as well as the limitations of using visual culture to articulate/construct and understand/read ancient identities. \nThis lecture is scheduled to take place in person in the Science Center Auditorium (SC 114) at The University of Dayton. \nFor a campus map with building and parking information visit https://udayton.edu/map/ \nThanks to the Archaeological Institute of America’s Lecture Program and its Dayton Society members this lecture is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Caesar's Cervisia
DESCRIPTION:Caesar’s Cervisia presented by Travis Rupp (CU Boulder) \nExaminations of Roman cuisine often downplay the role of beer in the ancient Roman diet seeing it as a symbol of barbarity. This presentation examines the plausibility of beer as a standard component of the Roman soldier’s diet and seeks to highlight when it may have become necessary for military advancement. Julius Caesar’s reliance on auxiliary forces to campaign in the North from 58-51 BCE ensured that cultures known for producing beer influenced legionary forces reliant on local resources to survive. This lecture also asserts the implausibility of wine consumption amongst Caesar’s men and concludes that the acceptance of beer as a standard component of the Roman soldier’s diet begins with Caesar’s campaigns in Gaul and Britain.
