SUMMARY:An Archaeological Investigation and Interpretation of a Cornerstone Deposit from Louisville's Confederate Monument
DESCRIPTION:Amid recent efforts to remove Confederate Monuments throughout cities in the South\, the City of Louisville removed its monument situated on a public street in the middle of the University of Louisville’s main campus. During disassembly of the monument\, a cornerstone box containing commemorative objects was found. This presentation discusses these objects and their relationship to the “Lost Cause” movement espoused by ex-Confederates. It also examines the battle for the memorial landscape and the monument itself as a symbol of ex-Confederate power that perpetuated the “Lost Cause” narrative into the present day.

SUMMARY:AIA Archaeology Hour with Katherine L. Chiou
DESCRIPTION:Join the AIA for a fascinating evening as Katherine L. Chiou (University of Alabama) presents Cuisine and Crisis: An Edible History of the Moche of Ancient Peru. \nThis presentation will be given at 8pm Eastern/7pm Central/6pm Mountain/5pm Pacific. \nImagine stepping into the shoes of an ancient Peruvian\, tasting the flavors and savoring the meals of a time long past. In this talk\, we’ll journey into the rich culinary history of the Moche people\, who thrived along the desertic northern Peruvian coast from AD 100-800. \nBut it’s not just about what was on the plate; it’s about what those meals can tell us about the lives\, struggles\, and joys of two very different parts of Moche society. By exploring both a grand feast preparation area and a humble commoner’s home\, we’ll dig into what food reveals about wealth\, status\, and daily life during a turbulent time marked by drought and political tension. \nHow did food contribute to social unrest? Were the rich and poor eating the same meals or were there stark differences? What does a simple dish tell us about a person’s identity? These questions and more will be served up in this delicious journey into the past\, blending archaeology\, technology\, and a good pinch of culinary intrigue. Whether you’re a foodie\, history buff\, or simply curious about how meals connect us to our ancestors\, this talk is a feast for the mind you won’t want to miss.

SUMMARY:Kelly Goldberg\, “Connecting the Diaspora: Archaeology\, Memory\, and Transnationalism in the 19th Century Transatlantic World”
DESCRIPTION:Kelly Goldberg\, University of South Carolina\n“Connecting the Diaspora: Archaeology\, Memory\, and Transnationalism in the 19th Century Transatlantic World” \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. \nJanuary 23\, 2023\n7:30 p.m. ET\nBelk Visual Arts Center 117\nDavidson College\nDavidson\, NC \nAbout the lecture:\nThe nineteenth century transatlantic slave trade had significant social\, political\, and economic ramifications for coastal West African environments\, and caused reverberations throughout the Atlantic world. As Britain pressured European and American imperial powers to join in anti-slave trading endeavors in the early portion of the nineteenth century\, the slave trade was directed to more secluded areas such as the Rio Pongo in coastal Guinea\, where imperial and national powers were scarce\, and both legal and contraband trade could continue to succeed. In these situations\, a newly established class of transnational trading families\, with ties to global connections on both sides of the Atlantic\, directed the evolution of local social and political landscapes. This talk engages interdisciplinary research to investigate 19th and 20th century sites throughout the Atlantic world\, looking at the ways in which material culture\, architectural remains\, documentary records\, and oral historical accounts are used to interpret the complex social dynamics and multiregional origins of a globally oriented African Diaspora. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Goldberg\, an Instructor for the Honors College at the University of South Carolina\, is a historical archaeologist with research specialties in the African Diaspora in both West\nAfrica and the eastern US\, public archaeology and stakeholder relations\, and museum studies and management. She has worked on James Island and in Guinea\, where she excavated slave trading ports in rural villages of coastal Guinea tried in order to understand how the newly emerging transnational network of nineteenth century trading families manipulated perceptions of identity to maintain power and status during evolution of the abolition of the slave trade\, and such manipulations of identity affect contemporary notions of memorialization and heritage. https://goldberg.uofsccreate.org/\nThis event is FREE and open to the public. SUMMARY:AIA Archaeology Hour with Jeff Altschul
DESCRIPTION:Join the AIA for a fascinating evening as Jeff Altschul presents Cultural Resource Management: What Most Archaeologists Do For A Living. \nThis presentation will be given at 8pm Eastern/7pm Central/6pm Mountain/5pm Pacific. \nToday\, there are about 12\,000 archaeologists working in the US with less than 10 percent of them employed by universities. While university anthropology and archaeology departments are shrinking\, the applied sector\, known as cultural resource management (CRM) is growing. What accounts for these opposing trends and what\, if anything\, can we do about it.

SUMMARY:Power of the Ancestors at Pylos\, Greece presented by Dr. Joanne Murphy
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few decades\, archaeologists have assigned ancestors significant roles in the supernatural orders of most ancient societies. They argue that ancestors\, through their connection to the divine or supernatural\, wielded a power that could transform society and grant exclusive rights over limited resources to those who could argue either for a familial connection to the ancestor or have access to the dead. These arguments are primarily derived from ethnographic research carried out on communal\, formal burial areas that were used for long periods of time. Several scholars have argued that Mycenaean elites (16th-12th c. BCE) in Greece drew power from their ancestors and were reliant on that source of power for their continued success.\nBased on a detailed examination of the dates of the tombs’ use\, the wealth of the artifacts in them\, and location of the tombs at Pylos\, I argue that the metaphysical components and significance of the mortuary arena and ancestors at Pylos fluctuated and instead of having a constant static function the manipulation of the ancestors cycled in relation to the changing political economy at the palace.\nThe varied lengths of time during which individual tombs were in use\, the different locations of the tombs at different periods in relation to the palace\, the changing quantities and values of the objects deposited in the tombs during the burials\, and the chronologically limited evidence for any non-funerary rituals at the tombs all indicate diachronic changes in the importance of ancestors among the elite groups at Pylos.
