is a Ph.D. student in Comparative Studies at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. He received his MA in history there is 2016 and currently works in the FAU library as a Manuscript and Archives Special Collections Assistant. Robert is also a member of the City of Plantation Historic Preservation Board. His specialty is 19th century US material culture focusing on early telegraph and railroad equipment. While an important corrective to the omission of women from historical accounts of the West\, the roles played by men in the construction\, organization\, and experiences offered by red-light districts have been largely ignored. This talk re-integrates men into the analysis of the Vanoli Block\, an infamous part of the red-light district in late 19th and early 20th century Ouray. Multiple masculinities – including the middle and upper-class Victorian men who organized the construction and operation of the district\, working class patrons\, and Chinese laundry workers – as well as women engaged in the sex trade\, are implicated in the creation of this distinctly Western venue. Research accelerated in the last 20 years with better recording and analytical techniques as evidenced by the increased number of papers on Southeast Asian rock art in international conferences and journals since the 2000s. The majority of sites are located from Indonesia and Thailand\, where sustained episodes of research have been conducted. New dates from Indonesia challenge long-standing ideas about the ‘origin’ of art while other discoveries shed light on the movements and activities of peoples across this diverse landscape. This lecture presents a survey of rock art across Southeast Asia from the deep past to more modern times and shows how rock art can help us better understand the archaeology of Southeast Asia. \nShort bibliography and/or website on lecture topic: \nRock Art of Southeast Asia \n \n(includes a bibliography and overview) \nBio: \nNoel Hidalgo Tan is the Senior Specialist in Archaeology at the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts in Bangkok\, where he works to promote the archaeology of Southeast Asia by building capacity among regional archaeologists\, finding ways to engage the public about archaeological and cultural heritage\, and conducting archaeological research. His main research interest is in the rock art of Southeast Asia\, where he spent his postgraduate work documenting sites in Malaysia\, Thailand\, Cambodia\, Laos and Myanmar. His recent projects include rock art documentation in western Laos and southern Thailand; the protection of regional underwater cultural heritage; archaeology\, tourism and the protection of Southeast Asian cultural heritage sites; and developing future capacity in regional archaeology education in Southeast Asia. What purpose did it serve within the funerary context? Or to put it most bluntly: Why did so many Romans want to imagine their dearly departed as resting within a wine vat?! \nI suggest that it explicitly invited viewers — bereaved family members — to reconceive the corpse’s decomposition and moldering within the vat-like casket in Dionysiac terms: as a process of fermentation like that which transformed grapes into wine. It offered mourners a comforting fantasy\, to reimagine the deceased’s putrefaction as instead a transubstantiation into a delicious elixir\, something elevated\, intoxicating\, and divine. Exploring a wide variety of evidence — art historical\, archaeological\, and taphonomic — this talk examines the plausibility of such an argument\, with special attention paid to the visual material and to what we can reconstruct about how Romans would have liquefied within their sarcophagi. Many medieval Arab scholars visited Egypt to study its heritage and ancient scripts. This interest in ancient Egyptian scripts led to many scholarly attempts to decipher them. Here is a brief study of the motivations behind their interest and the degrees of their success in the decipherment and understanding of ancient Egypt. Nearly all the writers interested in Egyptian hieroglyphs were alchemists; many were also called Sufis or Mystics (for example\, Jabir\, Dhu Al-Nun\, and Ibn Waḥshiyah). The fame of Egypt as the land of science\, wisdom\, and mysticism created a welcoming environment for the reception of ancient Egyptian thought and arts among medieval Muslim scholars and the general public. This medieval Muslim reception fills a gap of about a thousand years in the history of Egyptology. \nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Okasha El Daly specializes in the history\, art\, religion\, and languages of Egypt from the birth of its civilization to its contemporary history and current affairs. He has served as Inspector of Antiquities in the Giza Pyramids Area\, worked as a guide and lecturer in Egypt\, and lectured on the AIA’s national lecture circuit. He has directed several international projects\, including the Foundation for Science\, Technology\, and Civilisation in the UK and the recent Qatar-Sudan Archaeological Project.
