Participants can help themselves to free coloring supplies as well as some pen and ink drawings of monuments and artifacts drafted by Howard Crosby Butler during his campaigns to Sardis and Greece. SUMMARY:Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 19th is International Archaeology Day\, and the Frontier Culture Museum is offering archaeological activities all day! \nBut just what is archaeology and why are we talking about it at a living history museum? Archaeology is the study of patterns of material culture\, the tangible things that people made and used. Things that are still around\, just in the ground beneath us. Archaeology gives us a snapshot of the past. Objects enter the ground\, a house decays leaving only the foundation. We only get to see the remnants\, not the activity. History\, on the other hand\, is the study of human behavior in the past\, based on the records people themselves have left behind. You can see where one might inform the other. Both involve asking questions\, forming hypotheses and doing research. \nWe look at all of these clues\, carefully piece the fragments of a moment in time together\, and create a picture of what life was like\, for example\, on the frontier. \nSo\, what does Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum mean? It means walking around our Old World loop\, the farms from places people left behind to come to the New World\, and learning about different types of artifacts\, like metal and ceramics\, and also a little bit about experimental archaeology. It also means heading over to the New World section and being able to try your hand at excavation in our dig boxes and learning a bit about what happens after the artifacts are excavated. We hope to see you here at the museum\, as we celebrate International Archaeology Day!

DESCRIPTION:We have spent the first quarter of this school year learning about the process of archaeological digs\, including excavation\, documentation\, looking for sites\, preservation\, and the archaeology of the Southwest. We will be performing our very own dig for artifacts\, provided to us through the work of another class at the school. These created “artifacts” will include mud bricks resembling the corner of a structure\, coins\, and pottery. Students will perform the dig with a variety of tools\, and document findings.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 21st is International Archaeology Day\, and the Frontier Culture Museum is offering archaeological activities all day! \nBut just what is archaeology and why are we talking about it at a living history museum? Archaeology is the study of patterns of material culture\, the tangible things that people made and used. Things that are still around\, just in the ground beneath us. Archaeology gives us a snapshot of the past. Objects enter the ground\, a house decays leaving only the foundation. We only get to see the remnants\, not the activity. History\, on the other hand\, is the study of human behavior in the past\, based on the records people themselves have left behind. You can see where one might inform the other. Both involve asking questions\, forming hypotheses and doing research. \nWe look at all of these clues\, carefully piece the fragments of a moment in time together\, and create a picture of what life was like\, for example\, on the frontier. \nSo\, what does Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum mean? It means walking around our Old World loop\, the farms from places people left behind to come to the New World\, and learning about different types of artifacts\, like metal and ceramics\, and also a little bit about experimental archaeology. It also means heading over to the New World section and being able to try your hand at excavation in our dig boxes and learning a bit about what happens after the artifacts are excavated. Plus\, come see our experimental pottery firing on the Eastern Woodlands Indian site as we celebrate International Archaeology Day!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique guided tour to celebrate International Archeology Day. Gain insight into the artifacts used to reveal the story of feasting at this ceremonial site. Park interpreters and archeologists will set up along the trail to walk you through the steps of preparing a prehistoric feast. Artifacts highlighted will include stone tools\, cooking and serving vessels\, as well as animal bone and plant samples used for food by the Plum Bayou people. Stop by the Arkansas Archeological Survey booth to visit with staff and learn more about what they do. We will offer three tours during the day; 9:45 – 11 a.m.\, 12:30 – 1:45 p.m.\, and 3 – 4:15 p.m. Each tour has a maximum of 20 people\, so reservations are required. In this lecture\, Florida Public Archaeology Network will discuss the archaeology of the Florida Keys\, including what tools\, food\, animals\, and people would have used and encountered in the past. There will also be a brief overview of modern work in the area\, including current research being undertaken by universities in Florida. \nMalachi Fenn\, MA\, RPA – Before becoming Public Archaeologist for FPAN’s Southeast Region\, Malachi Fenn worked on cultural resource management (CRM) and museum projects throughout South Florida. They earned their B.A. in Anthropology from New College of Florida. A lifelong visual artist\, Malachi has provided archaeological illustrations for numerous publications. Their specializations include Florida pre-colonial and historical archaeology\, museum collections care\, and scientific illustration.” \nThe Matecumbe Historical Trust’s next free presentation will be held on Tuesday\, October 17th at the Islamorada Library\, mile marker 81.5 starting at 6 pm. DESCRIPTION:The 1901 shipwreck of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company’s SS City of Rio de Janeiro was the deadliest ever at the Golden Gate. Maritime archaeologist and historian James Delgado will share the story of the Rio\, including its rumored “treasure” that never existed\, and the discovery and rediscovery of the mud-shrouded hulk hundreds of feet deep. He will also share the stories of two less-known but tragic wrecks; SS City of Chester\, and the USS Conestoga\, which were also the focus of underwater archaeological discovery and surveys.
