SUMMARY:Archaeology Day Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Anthropology Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will hold its annual Archaeology Open House on October 28th\, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. \nActivities will take place on the ground floor of McElhaney Hall\, as well as outside on the East Lawn adjacent to the building (weather permitting). \nThe event\, free and open to the community\, is designed for all ages\, all levels of archaeology knowledge\, and all interests. All of the archaeology laboratories (including the faunal\, botanical\, and geophysical labs) will be open for tours. \nThe event also will feature a Stump the Archaeologist table\, where people can bring artifacts they have found for examination by IUP faculty. \nIn addition to tours of the labs\, the event includes prehistoric and historic artifact displays from local archaeological sites\, artifact identification\, stone tool-making demonstrations\, early human displays\, and lab tours. Children’s events will include prehistoric hand-painting\, wampum beading\, and pottery refitting. \nArchaeology Day is a tradition in the Anthropology Department that allows IUP students and faculty to share their knowledge and love of the past with others. The annual Open House is held during Archaeology Month and is celebrated in conjunction with International Archaeology Day\, a celebration of archaeology and the thrill of discovery held every year by the Archaeological Institute of America. \nEvery October\, the AIA and archaeological organizations across the United States\, Canada\, and abroad present archaeological programs and activities for people of all ages and interests. \nFor more information\, contact IUP anthropology faculty member Andrea Palmiotto (apalmiot@iup.edu) or Lara Homsey-Messer (lmesser@iup.edu). \nIUP’s Department of Anthropology offers undergraduate degrees in anthropology\, applied anthropology\, and archaeology\, along with a minor and a cultural competencies certificate. It also offers a master of arts degree in applied archaeology.

Their beers are attention-demanding explorations of Indigenous and local Southwestern ingredients. Pilsners\, hazy IPAs\, sours\, and farmhouse ales feature local blue corn\, sumac\, and prickly pear\, and hand-foraged neomexicanus hops\, the only hop indigenous to North America. They’ve translated their love of the land and their rich agricultural histories to incorporate ingredients that are foraged\, sourced from Tribal agricultural enterprises\, or grown on their rural property. They are creating initiatives they believe will make their industry more enduring. While they initially turned heads when they chose to open a brewery\, they’ve since demonstrated the power of their unique voice and perspective and have made their mark on the industry with recent recognition\, including being a 2024 James Beard Foundation Semifinalist.\nThat same year\, the world’s first nonprofit dedicated to sharing stories of how beer has shaped humanity\, was launched. A museum kid since the age 15\, Liz Garibay has spent most of her life and career digging in archives and working in various academic institutions and cultural centers around the world (including the Peabody Museum at Harvard). Inspired by the legacies of these historic establishments\, her own Mexican-American Midwestern heritage\, and her vast work in examining untold tales of beer history\, Garibay created the Beer Culture Center. The organization’s innovative approach to collaborations\, spirited storytelling\, and creative forward-thinking is exhibited in its expansive body of programming and has caused a stir in both the museum world and the beer industry.\nWe invite you to gather with us for a special evening and conversation that digs into the way these women of color are reclaiming Indigenous brewing histories and changing the beer industry.\nThrough Bow & Arrow Brewing\, Shyla and Missy are perfect examples of the Beer Culture Center’s mission that beer is more than just a beverage. DESCRIPTION:New museum exhibition at the Nashville Parthenon\, June 13\, 2025-April 19\, 2026 \nGet the story behind the creation and construction of Nashville’s Athena Parthenos with this historic exhibit. Alan LeQuire won the commission in 1982 by proposing a historically-accurate replica of the ancient statue. The young artist began an odyssey of research which included a visit to the ancient Parthenon in Greece\, and consultation with leading scholars. During the eight years of construction\, LeQuire triumphed over engineering complications\, political challenges\, and a fire that demolished his studio. SUMMARY:The World Between: Egypt and Nubia in Africa - Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Political boundaries are sharp\, but cultures tend to blend into each other. That ‘in-betweenness’ is rarely contained by political frontiers. What kind of social and cultural worlds connected Egypt with its southern neighbors? And what was Egypt’s relationship with other African cultures of its time\, like Nubia (in present day Sudan)? While contemporary scholarship acknowledges the indigenous origin of Egyptian culture\, its story is still rarely told from an African perspective. How did the earliest Egyptian and Nubian cultures relate to each other? In ancient Egypt\, Nubians were portrayed as wretched enemies\, bound captives\, or soldiers. To what extent were their lives defined by Egyptian ideas and colonization? What societal roles did they have and how did their cultural practices impact Egyptian ones? In later times\, the Kushite and Meroitic rulers of Nubia revitalized pharaonic culture. Their adoption of Egyptian symbols and beliefs is frequently examined through the lens of ‘Egyptianization.’ What was the nature of this borrowing\, and how were Egyptian customs blended with indigenous and other traditions? This exhibition aims to showcase the deep cultural embeddedness of ancient Egypt in Africa\, beyond merely acknowledging its geographical position on the African continent. What did Egypt owe to other African cultures in Nubia and\, inversely\, what did it bequeath to them? The exhibition demonstrates the complex interaction of different cultures in Egypt and Nubia\, from prehistory (ca. 3800 BCE) through the Post-Meroitic era (641 CE).
