SUMMARY:Archaeology Day Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Anthropology Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will hold its annual Archaeology Open House on October 28th\, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. \nActivities will take place on the ground floor of McElhaney Hall\, as well as outside on the East Lawn adjacent to the building (weather permitting). \nThe event\, free and open to the community\, is designed for all ages\, all levels of archaeology knowledge\, and all interests. All of the archaeology laboratories (including the faunal\, botanical\, and geophysical labs) will be open for tours. \nThe event also will feature a Stump the Archaeologist table\, where people can bring artifacts they have found for examination by IUP faculty. \nIn addition to tours of the labs\, the event includes prehistoric and historic artifact displays from local archaeological sites\, artifact identification\, stone tool-making demonstrations\, early human displays\, and lab tours. Children’s events will include prehistoric hand-painting\, wampum beading\, and pottery refitting. \nArchaeology Day is a tradition in the Anthropology Department that allows IUP students and faculty to share their knowledge and love of the past with others. The annual Open House is held during Archaeology Month and is celebrated in conjunction with International Archaeology Day\, a celebration of archaeology and the thrill of discovery held every year by the Archaeological Institute of America. \nEvery October\, the AIA and archaeological organizations across the United States\, Canada\, and abroad present archaeological programs and activities for people of all ages and interests. \nFor more information\, contact IUP anthropology faculty member Andrea Palmiotto (apalmiot@iup.edu) or Lara Homsey-Messer (lmesser@iup.edu). \nIUP’s Department of Anthropology offers undergraduate degrees in anthropology\, applied anthropology\, and archaeology\, along with a minor and a cultural competencies certificate. It also offers a master of arts degree in applied archaeology.

SUMMARY:A World Within Reach: Greek and Roman Art from the Loeb Collection
DESCRIPTION:A World Within Reach invites visitors to explore the experiences and imaginations of people who lived in the Mediterranean basin some 2\,000 to 2\,500 years ago. Clay and bronze depictions of ordinary people (with a few gods and heroes as well)\, small-scale animal sculptures\, and stunning jewelry are all arranged under three themes—power\, desire\, and wonder—reflecting human concerns then and now. \nThe more than 60 ancient Greek and Roman objects at the core of this exhibition are drawn from the collection of James Loeb (1867–1933)\, who graduated from Harvard College in 1888. Convinced that ancient literature could enrich contemporary lives\, he established the Loeb Classical Library. This series\, now published by Harvard University Press\, makes ancient Greek and Roman texts widely accessible by placing them side by side with their English translations. The objects from the Loeb Collection have come to Cambridge with the generous collaboration of Munich’s Staatliche Antikensammlungen und Glyptothek\, where they reside today. \nAs a collector\, Loeb was particularly attracted by small terracotta figurines. He felt that encounters with these humble objects brought ancient Greek and Roman lives within reach\, transmitted humanity and values across the ages\, and had the potential to expand modern perspectives. Today\, we ask different questions about antiquity than Loeb did a century ago. These fresh views help us query the past in new ways and reconsider our own presence in the world. \nThe final component of the exhibition reflects how members of the local community see ancient Mediterranean objects today. Teens in Cambridge Community Television’s 2022–23 School Year Production Program made short videos catalyzed by encounters with ancient Greek and Roman objects in the Harvard Art Museums collections. SUMMARY:The Odyssey: A Retelling
DESCRIPTION:The Parthenon and Centennial Park Conservancy are proud to present The Odyssey: A Retelling\, by Lisa Bachman Jones in the East Gallery of the Parthenon from June 23 through January 8. \nJones is a Nashville-based artist interested in entropy and interconnectivity. Working across disciplines\, she investigates the everyday through a lens of care. \nIn preparation for A Retelling Jones read Emily Wilson’s 2017 translation of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. The exhibition highlights the hospitality of the overlooked identities that made Odysseus’ long journey home possible. The body of work incorporates a wide range of media and techniques\, which echoes the number of communities\, locations\, actions and objects that paved the way for the classic homecoming. \nReflecting on the exhibit Jones notes the significance of the gallery’s location within the Parthenon\, which prompted the concept for A Retelling. The Parthenon in Athens\, Greece was a place for offering thanks to and soliciting help from Athena. The goddess is a constant in the poem; orchestrating events and guiding encounters. DESCRIPTION:On October 16\, 2021\, the Archaeological Institute of America-Nashville Society and the Nashville Parthenon are teaming up to join hundreds of archaeological organizations around the world to celebrate International Archaeology Day and the Tennessee STEAM Festival. \nFrom 9 AM – 12 PM\, a variety of socially distanced activity stations will be spread out across the second level of the Parthenon. Family-friendly STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts\, and Mathematics) activities will highlight archaeological work and artifacts\, and share the legacy of Greek culture to raise awareness of the ancient world. Museum visitors at this archaeology fair event will view The Antikythera Mechanism exhibition\, explore the replica interior of the ancient Parthenon\, participate in activity stations\, and earn an “Official Archaeologist of the Nashville Parthenon” sticker! Tabletop activity stations\, each equipped with 6ft social distance spacing\, hand sanitizer\, and sanitizing wipes\, include: \nOlive Oil Painting with Kidsville\n–Join Kidsville to learn about mythology stories as seen in Parthenon sculptures\, and use disposable materials to create your own take-home olive oil painting. \nAll About Antikythera\n–Gear up for some fun and find out how scholars have studied the world’s oldest computer\, the Antikythera mechanism\, since its discovery in the early 1900s. \nAsk an Expert\n–AIA Nashville Society officers will answer questions about all things archaeology and the ancient world! \nResearch Station\n–Designated the Quiet Area\, this inclusive space offers books and resources on archaeology\, ancient Greece\, and mythology. \nExperimental Archaeology\n–Visitors build miniature ancient structures with blocks and assorted materials just as archaeologists learn about the past by testing out ideas through experimentation of architectural steps and processes. \nPlease note: all visitors are required to wear face coverings inside the Nashville Parthenon. DESCRIPTION:All ages welcome; free for those in pirate costume or with Smithsonian Museum Day tickets\, ticketed admission for the other landlubbers.\nCelebrate the Mardi Gras Shipwreck exhibition with Capitol Park Museum and the Louisiana Office of Cultural Development – Division of Archaeology from 9am-3pm for a day of pirate-themed fun! \nMuseum Day is a annual one-day event in which participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. Participants are allowed to download one ticket per email address. The ticket provides free general admission on Saturday\, September 18\, 2021\, for two people. \nThe Museum Day theme this year is “Experience America.” With many public spaces being shut down for a year or more\, Museum Day 2021 celebrates the reopening of museums after long closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s theme\, Experience America\, represents the return to\, and resurgence of\, our country’s diverse cultural experiences\, in the safest possible way. \nwww.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/venues/museum/capitol-park-museum \nThe Mardi Gras Shipwreck Exhibition \nIn 2007\, a team of archaeologists and researchers mapped\, recovered\, and analyzed more than 1\,000 artifacts from an underwater archaeological site in the Gulf of Mexico. While the artifacts and research indicate the ship sank in the early 1800s\, the name of the ship and its crewmembers remain unknown. It’s referred to as the Mardi Gras Shipwreck for the pipeline where Okeanos Gas Gathering Company found it in 2002 while surveying the floor of the gulf about 35 miles off the coast in 4\,000 feet of water. \nThe Mardi Gras Shipwreck exhibit features recovered artifacts that remained underwater for over 200 years and represents over a decade of collaborative research and conservation. Visit the exhibit to learn more about what researchers pieced together from the remains of this mysterious shipwreck!
