SUMMARY:Archaeology-Hour Screening: Homer\, Hollywood\, and Historical Context
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person screening and informal discussion of the Archaeology Hour talk by Eric Cline (George Washington University). \nTwo movies\, twenty-two years apart: Wolfgang Peterson’s Troy with Brad Pitt in 2004\, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey with Matt Damon in 2026. Discussions swirling around both have centered on faithfulness to Homer’s original stories\, but what about the actual historical context and content? This lecture will briefly put these two movies\, which have brought Homer’s epics to the silver screen\, into historical context by discussing what we know (or think we know) about the end of the Late Bronze Age\, the identity of the Sea Peoples\, whether there was actually a Trojan Horse\, and other questions that are likely to have come up around the dinner table. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Imperial Barge: Cleopatra the Goddess
DESCRIPTION:Charles Eliot Norton Memorial Lectureship \nSpeaker: Dr. Alison Futrell\, University of Arizona \nAbstract:\nOne of the key motifs in popular representations of the last of the Ptolemies is Cleopatra’s Barge\, a nexus of seduction\, pleasure\, gratification. For the historical Cleopatra VII\, the barge was a political and religious platform for shaping positive interactions with diverse audiences in the ancient Mediterranean\, meant to stabilize and secure her realm and shape a vision for future authority\, with power strongly founded in the past. In Egypt\, Cleopatra reinforced connections with local powerbrokers and processed between ritual centers\, a dynamic divine ruler enacting key functions that ensured the practical and sacred continuity of her realm. Her famous Nile Cruise with Julius Caesar was a sacred pageant that featured her newly secured strength as queen\, goddess\, partner and chosen of the gods. Her notorious meeting with Antony on the barque of Isis was both a ritualized performance of royal leadership and the reassertion of dynastic claims\, the launch of a new Empire rising in the Eastern Mediterranean. \nZoom option – requires registration: https://tulane.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_3pyUju-wQC634ulV7NY_Ag

SUMMARY:Arkansas ArcheOlympics
DESCRIPTION:The ArcheOlympics is an annual competition that brings together teams of archeology students\, Arkansas Archeological Society members\, middle school students\, and anyone else interested in archeology and having fun. The games consist of 3 events in which teams compete to show off their skills and knowledge in archeology-based games. The first is throwing a spear with an atlatl. This takes some skill\, so most teams get together and practice before the event. Archeoletes throw for both distance and accuracy during the competition. The second event is the trivia contest. This event changes slightly each year based on the gameshow format that we choose\, but archeoletes answer questions about archeology\, important archeological sites\, archeological ethics\, and other topics related to the theme. The third event is the Excavation to Curation Obstacle course. The course changes slightly each year\, but teams work together to make their way through the simulated stages of archeological research. Teams work together to earn the most points throughout the day to win the 3D printed trophy!

SUMMARY:Valor at Valcour: Revolutionary War Wrecks in Lake Champlain and a Vision for Exhibiting US Navy’s Underwater Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the US Navy and the Battle of Valcour Island\, the Naval History and Heritage Command is highlighting two significant wrecks which represent ongoing but diverse research projects. \nThese wrecks represent some of the earliest of surviving examples of American naval forces\, and provide opportunities to study and elaborate on early naval history\, battle tactics\, living conditions aboard naval craft\, and ship design. \nRoyal Savage was Benedict Arnold’s flagship early in the battle and was in the immediate line of fire when the British entered Valcour Bay. The schooner ran aground before burning and sinking off Valcour Island. It was raised 158 years later\, disassembled\, then stored over the next 81 years before being returned in pieces to NHHC for documentation\, study\, and reconstruction in the form of scale models. \nIn stark contrast\, the gunboat Spitfire still rests intact on the Lake Champlain lakebed in remarkable condition and has been recently visited and documented by Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and NHHC\, with further work planned to preserve this sole intact in situ US naval vessel from the Revolutionary War. \nThis presentation will focus on the history and archaeology of the battle and of these specific wrecks from Valcour. At the end of the presentation\, we will introduce a new project for the Navy and partners\, with a long-term goal of recovering and conserving a rare WWII artifact for display in the planned new National Museum of the US Navy.

SUMMARY:The Tobacco Takers: Puritans\, Pipes\, and Bodily Care
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous to the Americas and cultivated by Native peoples for thousands of years\, tobacco was introduced to Europeans in the 16th century\, and by the early 17th century\, it had spread across the globe. In Puritan New England\, religious leaders condemned tobacco as sinful while early practitioners used it as medicine. Clay tobacco pipes commonly found at 17th-century archaeological sites in Massachusetts reveal widespread use despite strict social and religious restrictions. Drawing from her new book\, The Tobacco Takers: Puritanism\, Smoking\, Health\, and the Archaeology of Bodily Care (Bloomsbury Publishing\, 2026)\, Diana DiPaolo Loren\, deputy director for curatorial affairs and senior curator at Harvard’s Peabody Museum\, will share archaeological\, archival\, and visual evidence that recasts tobacco and tobacco pipes as tools of bodily care for both physical and metaphysical ailments. The program will include a conversation with archaeologist Stephen W. Silliman. \nCopies of The Tobacco Takers will be available for purchase after the program. Advance registration is recommended. \nFree event parking is available with registration at the 52 Oxford Street Garage\, starting at 5:00 pm. Register by October 12th\, 2026 to receive parking registration instructions. \nPresented by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology and the Harvard Museums of Science & Culture.

SUMMARY:The Materiality of Blue:
DESCRIPTION:Natural blue pigments in the ancient world are uncommon\, usually sourced from far away and difficult to process. Reviewing these shady characters\, like lazurite and azurite\, will shed light on ancient artisanal capabilities\, technical knowledge\, and even trade connections that reveal the extent to which ancient people would travel and experiment in order to find blue. The development in the late 4th millennium B.C. of a synthetic blue pigment\, Egyptian blue\, made it possible not only to paint in blue but even to use this material in ways beyond its primary state as a pigment. Experimental archaeology paired with ancient texts and archaeology\, making it possible to understand the stages by which these materials were made makes it possible to understand with heightened appreciation the technical innovation of antiquity.

SUMMARY:2026 Oklahoma Archaeology Month Lecture with Dr. Severin Fowles
DESCRIPTION:THE SOUTHERN ATHABASKANS: SEVEN CENTURIES OF INNOVATION FROM OKLAHOMA TO ARIZONA\nWhat archaeologists refer to as the Southern Athapaskan cultural tradition spread across the American Southwest during the second millennium CE as a dispersed network of social formations in creative dialogue\, first\, with the rise of large Ancestral Pueblo centers and\, later\, with the arrival of Spanish and American colonists. The tradition is often defined in linguistic terms\, though both the timing and significance of the arrival of the Athapaskan language in the region is debated. Others foreground the tradition’s structural position with a wider Southwest political economy-as one half of a strategic\, mutualistic\, and at times competitive relationship between aggregated farming villages and the more mobile groups of hunters that encircled them. In this presentation\, he argues that image production-particularly in the well-preserved medium of rock art-is emerging as a key line of evidence\, poised to significantly refine our understanding of the Southern Athapaskan tradition as a fast-changing regional phenomenon. His argument centers rock art evidence from the Rio Grande Valley but aims to also characterize wider patterns across the Pueblo region and Southern Plains.

SUMMARY:Isotope Analysis in Bioarchaeology: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:This 2-hour webinar provides a broad introduction to how archaeologists use isotope analysis of biological materials to understand the past. \nAimed at researchers\, heritage management professionals\, and students who are curious about isotope analysis but have no previous experience with it\, the webinar starts with the question “what is an isotope?” and guides participants through the theory and practice of the four most common types of isotope analysis applied in bioarchaeological research: carbon\, nitrogen\, strontium\, and oxygen. \nAfter completing the webinar\, participants will understand how bioarchaeological isotope analysis works\, how the results of isotope analysis are presented and interpreted\, and how isotope analysis can add value to both academic and commercial projects. After completing the webinar\, a Continuing Professional Development certificate can be provided to participants upon request.

SUMMARY:Archeologia nie taka skostniała!/ Archaeology is not so ossified!
DESCRIPTION:An Anthropological Investigation at the Museum! Become a Detective of the Past!\nCan bones reveal secrets from hundreds or even thousands of years ago? How can we uncover the story of a person who can no longer tell it themselves? We invite children and adults to an extraordinary adventure where science meets a detective mystery\, and the museum transforms into the scene of a fascinating investigation!\nThis is no ordinary lecture! Participants will step into the shoes of real researchers of the past\, discovering the methods used by scientists who can extract an incredible life story from the seemingly silent testimony of bones. What awaits the participants? An encounter with a human skeleton — get an up-close look at (and even touch!) replicas of human bones\, while uncovering the secrets of their structure. Facial reconstruction from a skull — discover how scientists reconstruct a person’s appearance based on their skeletal remains.\nLittle Anatomists in action — younger participants will create their own paper skeletons by cutting out and assembling the individual parts. It’s a fantastic\, creative\, and accessible way to learn about the human skeletal system. Facial reconstruction workshop — for the grand finale\, budding anthropologists will use a model skull and clay to sculpt a human face. Will they be able to recreate the features of an unknown individual?
