SUMMARY:Climate change\, human health\, and building an equitable sustainable future
DESCRIPTION:Earth’s mean annual surface temperature has increased by 1.3 degrees Celsius over the pre-industrial average. We know that over the next 75 years\, without an immediate and dramatic change in behavior\, we will see an increase of 3-8 degrees C\, levels not seen in the time since humans first evolved. The risks for human societies from this magnitude of warming are complex\, with interacting hazards that are potentially amplified by our response. Historical sciences can speak to these uncertainties about how it will affect our societies and our health. In this talk\, Dr. Gwen Robbins Schug will describe archaeological perspectives on human health and well-being during periods of rapid climate change over the past 10\,000 years. She will focus on the historical and socio-cultural factors that promoted resilience and those that were associated with high levels of violence\, infectious disease spillover\, and starvation. Ultimately\, Dr. Robbins Schug proposes that discussions of human health may be one of the greatest opportunities for motivating the urgent\, transformative\, and sustained actions we now require to achieve a fair\, equitable\, sustainable future on Earth.

DESCRIPTION:The Arkansas Archeological Survey and Arkansas Archeological Society are co-hosting a new Virtual Lecture Series\, called “Archeology in Pajamas\,” from Fall 2024 through Spring 2025. Have you been interested in attending a talk but weren’t wanting to travel far distances\, battle inclement weather\, or leave the house because you aren’t feeling up to coming to an in-person talk? Then\, this virtual Zoom lecture series is for you! We have a wide range of topics presented by speakers from varied parts of the country\, so there is sure to be something for everyone. You will need to individually register for each talk\, and more information about each will be released as the dates approach in new announcements. \nOur first webinar\, on Thursday\, October 10th\, will feature Dr. “Liz” Ibarrola\, who will be presenting “Rising Tides: Climate Change and the Untold Stories of Fort Mose.” Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose was a small\, fortified settlement founded in 1738 by the Spanish governor of East Florida and populated by emancipated Africans\, many of whom had escaped slavery in the adjacent British colonies. The fort\, and its surrounding town and agricultural fields\, was a manifestation of the freedom offered to enslaved people in Florida under the Spanish. Today invisible to the untrained eye and tucked away in a small state park\, Fort Mose reflects the little known but central role played by freedom-seeking Africans in the early history of Florida. Furthermore\, the threats to heritage preservation currently faced at the site highlight the ways in which social marginalization of Afro-diasporans has continuously impacted the site. SUMMARY:A Field of Their Own: Putting the Women of Egyptology in Their Place
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of IAD\, ARCE-OC presents a history of archaeology lecture by Dr. Kathleen Sheppard (Missouri S&T) pertaining to women active in the field of Egyptology and archaeology of ancient Egypt. \nWomen\, to paraphrase Virginia Woolf\, must have money and a site of her own if she is to do archaeology. Woolf was talking about writing fiction\, but the point remains: women must be free from domestic cares\, even just for a little while\, if they would be professionally productive. The women who worked in archaeology around the turn of the twentieth century understood this situation keenly and some were able to live out their freedom in a variety of ways. In this talk\, I will (re)introduce several women in the history of Egyptology who carved out spaces of their own through excavation\, patronage\, and publication and who shaped the discipline with their expertise.

Woolf was talking about writing fiction\, but the point remains: women must be free from domestic cares\, even just for a little while\, if they would be professionally productive. The women who worked in archaeology around the turn of the twentieth century understood this situation keenly\, and some were able to live out their freedom in a variety of ways. In this talk\, the lecturer will (re)introduce several women in the history of Egyptology who carved out spaces of their own through excavation\, patronage\, and publication and who shaped the discipline with their expertise. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDr. Kathleen Sheppard is a Professor in the History and Political Science department at Missouri S&T in Rolla\, Missouri. She earned her MA in Egyptian Archaeology at University College London in 2002\, and her PhD in History of Science from the University of Oklahoma in 2010. Her first book was a scientific biography of Margaret Alice Murray (2013) that focused on Murray’s life and career\, both in and out of Egyptology. She has spent her whole career telling the stories of women in Egyptology. Her latest book\, Women in the Valley of the Kings: The Untold Story of Women Egyptologists in the Gilded Age (St. Martin’s Press\, 2024) is a grand retelling of the history of Egyptology through the work that women did. \n———-\nParking is available in UC lots all day on weekends\, for a fee. Bridging Beaver Dam’s Past to the Present (and into the Future)” \nAbout the lecture: \nJoin Davidson College’s Historic Sites Program Manager\, Martha Gimson\, for a talk about the former plantation site Beaver Dam and its place in the past\, present\, and future. Beaver Dam\, located in Davidson\, NC\, was built for William Lee Davidson II in 1829. Davidson College was named for his father\, Revolutionary War General William Lee Davidson\, who was killed at the Battle of Cowan’s Ford in 1781. Davidson College has recently reclaimed management of the site from the Town of Davidson. \nDuring this talk\, we will explore the site’s history and what is known about who lived there freely as well as those held in bondage. The talk will also include a discussion on the direction Davidson College is taking to move the site forward as a place of learning and enrichment with emphasis on how to best use the interior space\, grounds\, and surrounding forested area. Plans for future archaeological research are part of the evolving strategic plan to bridge the past with the present and will help shape the direction of Beaver Dam for the future. \nAbout the speaker: \nA member of AIA Society 333\, Martha Gimson is a historical archaeologist and lifelong educator with a foundation in biological archaeology and geography. She focuses on the promotion of marginalized groups and the preservation of historical culture\, primarily in the southeast region of the US. Research and fieldwork include locating unmarked burial grounds of the enslaved and formerly enslaved\, cemetery mapping and remote sensing analysis of unmarked burials\, skeletal analysis of marginalized populations for corporeal evidence of structural and systemic violence\, and historical archaeology of homestead and plantation sites to further define the roles of African and African Americans in the history of the settlement of the Piedmont of North Carolina. She has worked with several local organizations as a Cultural Resource Consultant\, providing guidance and insight on preservation\, salvage\, history\, and advocacy.

DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to participate in archaeology at the Barracks for International Archaeology Day\, October 19\, 2024. Opportunities to help and observe are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \nThe City of Lewisburg and the Greenbrier Historical Society are sponsoring an archaeological survey of the Barracks property in Lewisburg  (934 N. Jefferson\, intersection of N. Jefferson and East Randoph streets)\,  partially funded by a grant from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture\, and History. \nThe Barracks property was within Camp Union\, the 1774 gathering of over 1\,300 militia in preparation for the march to Point Pleasant\, whose 250th anniversary was commemorated there on Saturday\, September 28\, 2024\, with period reenactments and a special exhibit. Parthenon visitors at this archaeology fair event will view two special exhibits\, Contemporary Kumiko in the East Gallery and The Role of Replica in the West Gallery\, explore Level 2’s replica interior of the ancient Parthenon\, participate in activity stations\, and earn an “Official Archaeologist of the Nashville Parthenon” sticker! \nActivities include:\n-Ask an Archaeologist\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Meet Dr. Kaitlyn Stiles\, an archaeologist\, human osteologist\, and forensic anthropologist who and will answer questions about all things archaeology and archaeological science.\n–About Dr. Kaitlyn Stiles: Dr. Stiles is a Senior Archaeologist\, Osteologist\, and Project Manager for the Environmental Planning and Permitting section of Kleinfelder\, Inc\, based in California. She has done research and analysis in Greece\, Poland\, Egypt\, and the United States. She has consulted with the Greek Archaeological Service\, the Channel Islands National Park\, and the Nevada State Museum to identify and assess human skeletal remains. As a forensic anthropologist\, she has worked for the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency\, contracted by SNA International. She became a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology (D-ABFA) in February 2022. She has active research projects in both bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology on skeletal remains from a modern 20th century cemetery in central Greece. SUMMARY:Open House at the St. James AME Zion Church Community Excavations
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to visit us at the historic St. James AME Zion Church. Stop by the garden anytime between 9 am – 3 pm to see our in-progress excavations\, join us\nin digging and screening for artifacts\, and learn more about the church and our project and how you can get involved! \nThe St. James AME Zion church building was constructed during the late 1830s and is today the oldest AME Zion church in the world still in active use. The building is known to have been the most important Underground Railroad station in Ithaca during the 1840s and 1850s. Harriett Tubman is known to have spent time at the Church and Frederick Douglass also visited. In 2021\, Cornell Institute for Archaeology & Material Studies faculty in collaboration with Gerard Aching (Cornell Africana) and Reverend Terrance King (St. James AME Zion Church) launched a new community engaged initiative to explore the history of the St. James community. Our goal is to use archaeology as a means to help the Church and wider community tell empowering stories of St. James’s past. We hope to inspire all participants to learn more about their community and its rich history.

DESCRIPTION:This year\, Archeopark Pavlov will once again join the worldwide celebrations of archaeology and we have once again prepared a rich event program. The International Archaeology Day with the subtitle “How I dug” will be in the spirit of this year’s accompanying exhibition How we (hunted) dug mammoths\, which is devoted to the topic of mammoth deposits as a phenomenon of mammoth hunters\, but also primarily to the work of archaeologists themselves across several generations captured in photographs. \nOn Saturday\, October 19\, 2024\, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, the gates will be open to all archeology lovers completely free. There are three guided tours of the permanent exhibition at 10:00 a.m.\, 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Narration “On research under Pálava then and now with prof. Jiří Svoboda” (Institute of Archaeology Czech Acad Sci\, Brno) will start from 11:00 a.m. At 1:00 p.m. there will be a guided tour with the authors of the accompanying exhibition How we (hunted) dug mammoths\, Mgr. Soňa Boriová\, Ph.D. and Mgr. Ondřej Herčík from Institute of Archaeology Czech Acad Sci\, Brno. \nIn addition\, this program will be supplemented with several activities. In the exhibition\, it will be possible to participate in two games not only for families with children\, namely “Paws into the past” and also the game “Lost bones.” In the second of the games\, after its successful completion\, you can participate in a draw for interesting prizes from the Pavlov Archeopark collection. SUMMARY:Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 19th is International Archaeology Day\, and the Frontier Culture Museum is offering archaeological activities all day! \nBut just what is archaeology and why are we talking about it at a living history museum? Archaeology is the study of patterns of material culture\, the tangible things that people made and used. Things that are still around\, just in the ground beneath us. Archaeology gives us a snapshot of the past. Objects enter the ground\, a house decays leaving only the foundation. We only get to see the remnants\, not the activity. History\, on the other hand\, is the study of human behavior in the past\, based on the records people themselves have left behind. You can see where one might inform the other. Both involve asking questions\, forming hypotheses and doing research. \nWe look at all of these clues\, carefully piece the fragments of a moment in time together\, and create a picture of what life was like\, for example\, on the frontier. \nSo\, what does Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum mean? It means walking around our Old World loop\, the farms from places people left behind to come to the New World\, and learning about different types of artifacts\, like metal and ceramics\, and also a little bit about experimental archaeology. It also means heading over to the New World section and being able to try your hand at excavation in our dig boxes and learning a bit about what happens after the artifacts are excavated. We hope to see you here at the museum\, as we celebrate International Archaeology Day!
