SUMMARY:International Archaeology Day: Meet an Archaeologist
DESCRIPTION:Drop in to learn about archaeology with graduate students. Join archaeologist Jack Bishop and examine ancient stone tools for a glimpse into the early domestication of animals and the rise of agriculture in the Middle East (11:00 am–1:00 pm). See how the ancient Inka of Peru (c. 1400–1532 CE) wrote with string. Join archaeologist Mack FitzPatrick in deciphering a khipu—a knotted string record-keeping system–through close examination of a working replica. (1:00–3:00 pm). Handle examples and ask questions. Look for the archaeologists in the third floor gallery. \nFree with regular museum admission. \nPresented by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology and Harvard Museums of Science & Culture

SUMMARY:Ecological Aquaculture and Domesticated Waterscapes in Ancient Maya Society\, Subsistence\, and Art in Chiapas\, Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joel Palka\nAssociate Professor\, School of Human Evolution and Social Change\nArizona State University \nDr. Palka’s ongoing archaeological and anthropological project at Lake Mensabak in Chiapas explores past to present Maya use of modified waterscapes for fishing and managing plant communities. At this and other sites in the region\, Maya people collectively dug canals and made reservoirs for large-scale\, integrated ecological aquaculture. Like domesticated landscapes for agriculture\, people in the Mesoamerican culture area engineered water works for harvesting fish\, turtles\, waterfowl\, and aquatic plants for household consumption. This presentation covers insights from archaeology\, Maya collaborations\, art\, and ethnohistory indicating that fisheries can be added to current research on raised fields\, water control\, subsistence ecology\, and community organization in Mesoamerica.

SUMMARY:Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex Celebrates International Archaeology Day
DESCRIPTION:MOUNDSVILLE\, W.Va. — Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex will celebrate International Archaeology Day on October 15 with a program titled The Real Bebbanburh: The Castle That Started it all in Netflix’s Hit Drama “The Last Kingdom”. The program starts at 2:00 pm on Saturday\, October 15\, and is open to the public free of charge. \nThe program will be presented by Lauren E. Nofi\, a community archaeologist who has worked at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Colonial Williamsburg in the United States; also in Ireland\, Scotland and the United Kingdom. This castle features as the hero Uhtred’s motivation in both The Last Kingdom books by Bernard Cornwell (who also wrote the Sharpe’s Rifles series) and subsequent television series. The castle is real\, but is Uhtred? Moreover\, was the castle ever worth all that trouble? This presentation is appropriate for those both familiar and unfamiliar with the series\, by an archaeologist who has personal experience excavating at Bebbanburh\, now called Bamburgh\, \nSaturday\, October 15 has been designated International Archaeology Day by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA). An international list of programs for the event at https://www.archaeological.org/programs/public/archaeologyday/ . \nOperated by the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex features one of the largest conical burial mounds built by the Adena people between 250 – 150 B.C. and ranks as one of the largest earthen mortuary mounds anywhere in the world. Exhibits and displays in the Delf Norona Museum interpret what is known about the lives of these prehistoric people and the construction of the mound. The complex also houses the West Virginia Archaeological Research and Collections Management Facility. \nAdmission to Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex is free. The Delf Norona Museum\, located at 801 Jefferson Avenue\, is open 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sunday and Monday. SUMMARY:American Research Center in Egypt- Pennsylvania Chapter (ARCE-PA) Lecture: Dr. Luigi Prada
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 15 \nDr. Luigi Prada\nAsst. Professor of Egyptology\,
Uppsala University (Sweden) \n“If a crocodile has sex with her\, she will die swiftly”:
Dreams and Divination in Ancient Egypt” \n3:30pm\nClassroom L2

\, Penn Museum \nAbstract \nIn the ancient world\, the Egyptians had a reputation for excelling in divination\, the practice of gaining knowledge about the future via occult channels. Many types of divination were known and habitually practiced in ancient Egypt\, primarily by temple priests who employed specific handbooks for this purpose. Such arts included astrology\, the study of the behavior of animals (so-called animal omina)\, oil divination (aka lecanomancy)\, and more. But one particularly popular branch of divination was oneiromancy\, that is\, dream interpretation. \nThis talk will introduce the audience to new research on ancient Egyptian oneiromancy\, discussing in detail the workings of dream interpretation manuals and what light they shed on our knowledge of the ancient Egyptian mind. \nBiography:\nDr. Luigi Prada is Assistant Professor of Egyptology at Uppsala University\, Sweden. Formerly\, he was a member of the Egyptology departments of Oxford\, Heidelberg\, and Copenhagen University. Within Egyptology\, he specializes in textual\, religious\, and social studies\, with particular focus on the Late and Graeco-Roman Periods. He is passionate about fieldwork\, and is the Assistant Director of the Oxford/Uppsala epigraphic team working with Egyptian colleagues in Elkab in southern Egypt; he has also participated in fieldwork in Sudan. He is currently President of the Society of Friends and Collaborators of the Museo Egizio in Turin (ACME).

SUMMARY:Family Archaeology Day at Cumming Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:Grab a trowel\, hop into the trench\, and join archaeology professors and students from SUNY Brockport as we uncover the story of a 19th century homestead located at the Nature Center. Did it burn down or collapse? Where was the kitchen? Whose bones and teeth are found in the yard? Help us piece together the story of Frost Town\, an abandoned logging settlement founded at the end of the 18th century in the old-growth pine forests of the Onondowagah\, or Seneca\, people. \nAt Family Archaeology Days\, participants will literally be in the trenches as they learn about the history of Frost Town and the basics of archaeological fieldwork\, including: \nMethods of excavation\nHow to properly clean artifacts\nTricks for identifying artifacts\nThis event is part of a multi-year project that provides public access to Frost Town Archaeology (FTA)\, a SUNY Brockport archaeology field school site that’s located at the Cumming Nature Center. Students in FTA focus on the Hall Homestead site\, a residence built by an early settler of Frost Town. During Family Archaeology Days\, visitors have the opportunity to help excavate a less fragile homestead located closer to the Visitor Center\, complementing the work being done at the Hall Homestead. \nNote- the dig event is sold out as of 10/13/2022\, but you can still visit the nature center!

SUMMARY:Rethinking Maya Heritage: Past and Present (Free Hybrid Lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Richard M. Leventhal\, Professor\, Department of Anthropology and Executive Director\, Penn Cultural Heritage Center\, Penn Museum\, University of Pennsylvania \nThe story of Maya culture as a once-great civilization that built towering pyramids in the jungles of Central America was developed and popularized by national governments\, anthropologists\, and archaeologists. Previously unable to control the story of their own culture\, Maya communities today are actively reframing their heritage and centering their most recent history—not the distant past—to regain power and self-determination. Richard Leventhal will discuss the importance and role that the nineteenth-century Caste War—one of the largest and most successful Indigenous rebellions—is playing in the Maya’s contested heritage. \nFree parking at the 52 Oxford Street Garage. \nPresented by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology and Harvard Museums of Science & Culture

SUMMARY:Site visit to the Meet the Phoenicians of Malta exhibition at the National Museum of Archaeology\, Valletta
DESCRIPTION:Led by Mr. David Cardona\, Senior Curator\, Phoenician\, Roman and Medieval Sites\, Heritage Malta. Mr. Cardona will also take members round the Phoenician and Punic gallery on the top floor of the museum. \nA Phoenician stone sarcophagus excavated last year at Għajn Klieb\, on the outskirts of Rabat\,Malta is one of the major attractions in this exhibition. It brings to light the results of months of painstaking studies by a multidisciplinary team researching the sarcophagus and two other tombs discovered in the area\, as well as their contents. The three tombs\, although inherently different\, shed light on the burial rituals of the earliest Phoenicians on the island.

SUMMARY:After the Dig - studies from the Phoenician shipwreck. Lecture by Professor Timmy Gambin\, Associate Professor of Maritime Archaeology in the Department of Classics and Archaeology\, University of Malta.
DESCRIPTION:Those involved in any archaeological project know that for every hour spent excavating a site\, many more must be dedicated to post-excavation. One must rationalise\, analyse and interpret data that were gathered in the course of the project. Experts are brought in\, students offered research opportunities and all information gathered placed in a database. However\, simply producing and storing a number of disparate research strands is unsatisfactory. They need to be looked at holistically and woven into a narrative that can contribute to a better understanding of some facets of the human past. This talk explores various past and ongoing research projects that have emanated from the Phoenician Shipwreck Project following the conclusion of four excavation seasons in 2021. Although this research is still very much in ‘strand form’\, the audience will gain insight not just into current workings but also of the historical fabric that will hopefully be woven over the coming years.
