DESCRIPTION:Those involved in any archaeological project know that for every hour spent excavating a site\, many more must be dedicated to post-excavation. One must rationalise\, analyse and interpret data that were gathered in the course of the project. Experts are brought in\, students offered research opportunities and all information gathered placed in a database. However\, simply producing and storing a number of disparate research strands is unsatisfactory. They need to be looked at holistically and woven into a narrative that can contribute to a better understanding of some facets of the human past. This talk explores various past and ongoing research projects that have emanated from the Phoenician Shipwreck Project following the conclusion of four excavation seasons in 2021. Although this research is still very much in ‘strand form’\, the audience will gain insight not just into current workings but also of the historical fabric that will hopefully be woven over the coming years.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 29th\, 10am-1pm\n$ = $4 park admission fee\, visitors 3 and under and 62 and older admitted free.\nFamily friendly \nVisitors to Poverty Point World Heritage Site are invited to take part in a ranger-led pottery demo Saturday\, October 29th. During this guided experience\, visitors will learn about the pottery created and used by Native Americans at Poverty Point 3\,500 years ago. The program begins with the demo at 10 a.m.; afterward\, visitors are free to create their own pottery until the program ends at 1 p.m. This program uses air-dry clay\, and visitors are welcome to take one of their finished pottery pieces home. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing for a potentially messy program. \nCandy will be provided by the Louisiana Office of State Parks for this Halloween program\, so visitors are encouraged to bring a trick or treat bag! \nPoverty Point World Heritage Site offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience and learn about the earthworks and those individuals who raised them from the ground between the years of 1700 and 1100 BCE. The $4 admission fee provides access to the museum\, film theatre\, hiking trail\, driving tour\, seasonal tram tour\, and any interpretive events taking place at the site. Children (3 and under) and senior citizens (62 and over) are admitted free of charge. \nPoverty Point is located at 6859 HWY 577\, Pioneer LA 71266. DESCRIPTION:Join Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark and Museum staff and Mu Alpha Nu Anthropology Club for a morning of friendly competition. Competitors will use atlatls to throw darts at 6 different targets featuring Ice Age Megafauna. Competitors and spectators alike can enter the Halloween Costume Contest. SUMMARY:Vietnam & Cambodia: Cruising the Mekong River
DESCRIPTION:Archaeological Institute of America lecturer and host Joyce C. White will share insights with you throughout this journey. Dr. White has worked in Southeast Asian archaeology since the mid-1970s and currently directs a field-based archaeological research program in Laos that focuses on the history and prehistory of the Mekong Basin. She is co-director of the Middle Mekong Archaeological Project (MMAP) and Director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum’s Ban Chiang Project. Since 1987 Dr.\nWhite has been a researcher and associate curator at the Penn Museum\, and she is now adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2013 she founded the Institute for Southeast Asian Archaeology (ISEAA)\, where she is currently its Executive Director. Dr. White has been a lecturer on seven previous tours to Laos\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, Thailand\, and Myanmar\, including four times with the AIA on this very Mekong Princess program since 2016. During our trip\, she will discuss the culture\, history\, and prehistory of the Mekong River Basin\, the world’s twelfth longest river\, and the main artery for mainland Southeast Asia for communication\, trade\, and population movements for thousands of years. She will also discuss the ancient and historic trade networks that linked Southeast Asia to the rest of the Old World\, and the origins of Southeast Asian civilizations\, with a particular focus on the Khmer Empire. Her most popular lectures are about current archaeological research at Angkor\, and about her experience as an expert witness for a US Justice Department case on smuggling of Asian antiquities. Over many millennia\, this fascinating country rich in natural resources with three extraordinary UNESCO sites has greatly contributed to archaeological knowledge. SUMMARY:NAGPRA: The Repatriation and Reburial of Angel Mounds
DESCRIPTION:Passed in 1990\, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) provides a legal mechanism for the repatriation and return of Native American and Native Hawaiian ancestral remains and cultural items. In addition to the return of collections\, consultation with federally recognized tribal nations is one of the most important components of this federal mandate. In 2021\, Indiana University completed the Angel Mounds repatriation\, the largest in Midwestern history. This project remains a valuable case study which highlights the complexities of working with a large archaeological collection\, collaborating with numerous tribal nations\, and navigating the challenges of finding respectful reburial lands.

SUMMARY:Texas Talks Speaker Series: Dr. Reid Ferring - A Look at the Aubrey Clovis Site
DESCRIPTION:Join the Denton County Office of History and Culture for the Texas Talks Speaker Series! \nOn Wednesday\, October 4 at 6 PM\, archaeologist Dr. Reid Ferring will present “Discovering the First People of Denton County” in the Commissioners Courtroom at the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum. This presentation is sponsored by the Denton County Historical Commission in celebration of Texas Archaeology Month. \nOn Dec. 2\, 1988\, Dr. Ferring and his eight year old son\, Taylor\, were on a mission to collect fossils for Taylor’s 3rd grade class near their home in Aubrey\, Texas. What they discovered that day turned out to be one of the oldest campgrounds in North America—well over 11\,000 years old. \nArchaeological excavations of this site in Aubrey by Dr. Ferring revealed an exceptionally preserved record of Late Pleistocene environments and the activities of Clovis people along the Trinity River. Over 9\,000 stone artifacts and 25\,000 bones of animals provide evidence of Clovis food procurement and processing. At 13\,500 years ago\, these are the earliest records of Clovis in Texas. \nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Reid Ferring is a Professor Emeritus at the University of North Texas\, as well as an archaeologist and geologist\, focusing on Eurasia and the North American Great Plains. He maintains research interests in Clovis Paleoindian occupations of the Southern Plains and lithic technology. Dr. Ferring teaches a variety of courses including Physical Geology\, Soils Geomorphology\, Geology of Texas\, Origins of Civilization\, and regional archaeological surveys of the Old World and New World. He advises graduate students and supervises their research in their chosen areas as well as his research projects.

In this lecture and workshop\, we will explore the diverse forms and functions of ancient sundials\, as well as their social uses and political meanings. From rudimentary wall-dials to complex and highly precise instruments\, and from the portable devices of soldiers to the great monuments of emperors\, these artefacts illuminate much more than ancient methods of reckoning time: they are works of art\, signs of power\, and a record of one of humanity’s earliest searches for order in the universe.
